Responsibilities

The Systems Engineering Systems Director will be ​​responsible for all systems engineering mission accountabilities for the Western Range Directorate (WRD) – duties include: Manage engineering staff and casuals who provide specific expertise in support of mission assurance verification of MDA vehicles; Delta IV and Falcon 9 launch operations; and launch site support to New Entrant Certification.  Support the WRD customers at meetings and during day-to-day operations: Evaluate out-of-position work, out-of-sequence work and dispositions of non-conformances to assess the impact on mission risk and to provide recommendations to reduce risk. Maintain relationships with a diverse Aerospace staff (scattered throughout the company) and achieve responsiveness to customer rapid-response tasking. Communicate effectively with senior Customer, Contractor, and Aerospace management. Moderate travel required to support Customer requirements and needs

 

Key Functions:

  • Maintain security compliance and promotion of safety, security, and environmental awareness within the WRD
  • Support direct reports to establish common directorate goals, monitor progress, modify/add goals as needed, and evaluate end of the year performance
  • Mentor / coach staff with challenging assignments tailored to the individual growth goals of the staff. Manage STE resources balanced against allocation and accountabilities
  • Challenge and motivate the team to achieve high standards and hold them and self accountable
  • Identify and recruit  corporate staff and provide direct reports career broadening opportunities
  • Ensure staff compliance in keeping with corporate policy on time charges, travel, HR practices, mandatory safety, ethics, conflict of interest, harassment and diversity training requirements

Qualifications

Required

  • BS Degree in Engineering, Physics, Computer Science, or a related field
  • Management experience of technical staff or demonstrated ability to lead technical teams on large scale projects
  • Demonstrated ability to recruit, train and mentor staff
  • Work experience in matrixed staff organizations with project lead or management experience
  • Twelve years of progressively responsible experience and demonstrated expertise in launch vehicle systems
  • Demonstrated experience with NSSL, MDA and NRO organizations with working knowledge of industry, Range Safety and Air Force standards
  • Ability to support off-shift requirements as needed
  • A favorable SSBI (or the ability to obtain one)

 

Preferred 

  • Demonstrated understanding of Falcon 9, Delta IV, interceptor and target vehicle flight and ground system interfaces, integration and test activities, and launch verification processes, especially as they impact mission assurance 
  • Experience with the New Entrant Certification process
  • Experience with launch base, range, and facility infrastructure
  • Experience with STARS and or telemetry processing
