Responsibilities

The Systems Director will lead a geographically distributed team supporting Goddard Space Flight Center {GSFC), NASA HQ, and Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC). Staff are currently based in Crystal City, VA, GSFC, and Greenbelt, MD.  Typical activities in support of NASA GSFC include concept studies, proposal evaluation, technology assessment, concept development, business change initiatives including cost/schedule and affordability assessments. The Systems Director interacts directly with these geographically dispersed government customers, develops task statements and work scope, assembles technical teams to perform the work, manages and participates in work execution and integrates technical analyses products into high quality, unified final products. Presents study findings to customers at all levels of the customer organization, from senior project managers and staff through Program Managers.

 

Key Functions

  • The Systems Director is responsible for NASA customer satisfaction, financial performance including sales, margin and related investment expenses and extensive directorate, division and corporate reporting.
  • The Systems Director will lead NASA GSFC and NASAHQ focused business development efforts, coordinating with business developers inside Development and throughout Aerospace, as needed.
  • The Systems Director will work closely and coordinate with other System Directors at Crystal City, Pasadena, Los Angeles, etc. to optimally deploy resources within the Strategic Analyses and Studies Division, and within Aerospace and manage conflict of interest.
  • Candidates should be able to effectively lead a team in a rapidly changing environment, react quickly to changing requirements and schedules, and provide products of consistently high quality.
  • Travel will be required to meet with staff and interact with customers.
  • Position is based in Greenbelt MD.

Qualifications

Required

  • B.S. degree in science or engineering is required. A graduate degree is preferred in science or engineering. A degree in business or management is preferred.
  • A minimum of 12 years of relevant multidisciplinary experience, including significant technical experience in at least two areas directly related to NASA space missions such as conceptual mission design, architecture, system development, risk analysis, cost/schedule assessment or systems engineering is required.
  • Experience interacting with GS-15/SES customer level counterparts is required.
  • Demonstrated experience recognizing and defining the customer's broad scope space problems is required.
  • Demonstrated experience in leading project and study teams and managing staff.
  • Demonstrated experience in developing and capturing new business.
  • Experience building and leading multidisciplinary teams to solve customer problems or seek new business is required.
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills with customers and internal management are required.
  • Comfort with ambiguity and fast paced, rapidly changing environment.
  • Experience working with remote and virtual teams.
  • Availability for domestic travel is required

 

Preferred

  • Program office project leadership experience or ETG management experience is preferred.
  • Experience working with a variety of Engineering Group capabilities and the Engineering Group matrix is preferred.
  • Past experience working directly with other customers, such as NASA especially, NASA HQ, and centers such as GSFC, and other government agencies like NRO, SMC, or civil space clients, is preferred.
