Responsibilities

This is an unprecedented time for space and everything from rockets to satellites are being transformed.  The Aerospace Corporation is a not-for-profit, national research and development center and the sole entity that works with every spacefaring agency and interests with all of the companies that have come define new space (SpaceX, Planet, Blue Canyon, Virgin, Rocket Lab, Blue Origin, and many others).

 

The Aerospace Corporation is at the forefront of this transformation and its iLab innovation team is responsible for dreaming up the next big ideas and game-changers for space.  The iLab team manages the company’s internal R&D portfolio, runs a virtual skunkworks to develop new mission concepts for space, and makes moonshot bets on the next big tech for space. 

 

The iLab team is looking for talented technologists who have a passion for breaking with convention and impatient to make a difference.  Our team works collaboratively to find, cultivate, and transition innovations for the next generation of space.  

 

A typical day in the iLab Office:

  • Work with subject-matter experts to devise a new solution to a hard problem
  • Meet with startups and the top universities to form new collaborations in game-changing tech
  • Implement new strategies and programs to spur the creative energy within the company
  • Create compelling content to ensure our staff and customers share the same vision
  • Manage a portfolio of projects that range from concept development efforts to space flight prototypes

 

We look for talent that have:

  • Passion for applying technology to develop solutions and can spot emerging trends
  • Experience working in and leading project teams to develop proof-of-concepts  and prototypes
  • Skills create and communicate complicated or complex ideas and technologies in simple to understand language
  • Ability to work collaboratively in small and large teams
  • Knack for seeing the big strategic picture and also translate that into digestible actions

 

Key Functions

Level II

  • Facilitate execution of projects sponsored by the iLab Office
  • Assist in managing core functions of the iLab Office
  • Lead iLab Office projects or project tasks
  • Capture, document, and message technical advances and innovations
  • Create compelling and crisp mixed-media descriptions of technologies and innovations
  • Evaluate new technologies, concepts, and business models

 

Level III

  • Manage a sub-portfolio of projects sponsored by the iLab Office
  • Responsible for one or more core functions of the iLab Office
  • Develop, plan, and lead iLab Office initiatives
  • Develop, plan, and manage internal and external outreach events
  • Assess the progress of projects sponsored by the iLab Office
  • Provide sponsorship support to R&D and innovation projects
  • Provide regular guidance and feedback to project leads
  • Develop messaging and marketing strategies
  • Develop innovation, investment, and technology strategies and plans
  • Develop new concepts or innovative ventures

 

This position could be filled as a level II or III.

Qualifications

Required for Level II

  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant technical field (engineering, science, mathematics, etc.) 
  • Minimum of 8 years of experience in technology, innovation, or R&D relevant to space
  • Proven experience in successfully leading teams
  • Proven ability to take the initiative, excellent interpersonal skills, mature judgement, exceptional coordination skills, high level of comfort working with vagueness, outstanding written, verbal, and presentation skills
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a TS/SSBI security clearance, which is issues by the U.S. government. U.S. citizenship is required 

 

Required for Level III

  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant technical field (engineering, science, mathematics, etc.) 
  • Minimum of 12 years of experience in technology, innovation, or R&D relevant to space
  • Proven experience in successfully leading teams
  • Proven ability to take the initiative, excellent interpersonal skills, mature judgement, exceptional coordination skills, high level of comfort working with vagueness, outstanding written, verbal, and presentation skills
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a TS/SSBI security clearance, which is issues by the U.S. government. U.S. citizenship is required 


Preferred 

  • Experience working on innovation projects or leading innovation initiatives
  • Experience with transitioning technologies and innovations into operational use
  • Experience leading R&D projects
  • Experience managing R&D portfolios
  • Experience with start-ups or the entrepreneurial sector
  • Experience working with or for an FFRDC or UARC
  • Advanced technical degree
  • Current TS/SCI
