The Thermal Control Department consists of a team of highly respected engineers with deep expertise in the design and analysis of spacecraft thermal control systems from component to system level. The department performs technical studies, experimental investigations, and real-time assessments to support internal and external customer programs. No other company collects such a breadth of technical knowledge and experience in space thermal systems. This position requires a strong background in cryogenics and two-phase flow technologies as well as their applications to space systems.

Key Functions

  • Provide expertise in the areas of spacecraft thermal control systems for multiple space vehicle programs with emphases in cryogenic and two-phase cooling technologies.
  • Assess system integration of infrared and other sensors with cryogenic cooling systems such as mechanical refrigeration, radiators, expendable coolants, and thermal storage devices.
  • Lead and conduct analysis, modeling, simulation, and assessments of designs and design concepts relating to spacecraft thermal control systems and their components.
  • Lead and conduct experimental investigations including thermal design, integration, and test, data reduction and visualization, and application of results.
  • Participate in and review integration, test, and flight operations relating to spacecraft thermal control systems and their components.
  • Interact with space vehicle program offices to identify and resolve design, acceptance and performance issues relating to the hardware comprising thermal subsystems.
  • Provide timely and technically accurate reports of findings and analyses to management and requesting customers.
  • Travel to government and contractor facilities in support of design reviews, readiness reviews, technical audits, failure investigations, technical interchange meetings, launch support activities, and hardware acceptance reviews.
  • Lead and participate in the broader thermal technology community through conferences, concept development, and technical interaction with other leaders in the field. Identify significant technological developments that can contribute to the success of space projects.


  • Graduate degree in mechanical engineering or related engineering program with a strong background specializing in cryogenics, two-phase technologies, advance heat transfer, thermodynamics, and energy system simulation
  • At least 10-years experience in the field of cryogenics and/or heat pipe technologies
  • Expertise in the design of thermal control systems and the use of cryocooler and/or fluid flow systems for space cooling applications
  • Established reputation in the fields of cryogenics and/or two-phase technology
  • Experience working independently and demonstrating technical leadership
  • Ability to obtain and maintain an SCI security clearance, which is issued by the U.S. government. An existing SCI clearance is highly preferred. U.S. citizenship is required to obtain a security clearance.



  • Direct experience with spacecraft or launch vehicle system-level design, integration, and test.
  • Demonstrated experience mentoring individuals and building technical teams.
  • Proficiency with any of the following tools: Thermal Desktop, TSS, SINDA, SOAP/STK, SolidWorks/CAD, Finite Element Analysis / Finite Difference / Finite Volume solvers.
  • Active DOD Secret or Top Secret Clearance is preferred.
  • Active TS/SCI clearance is highly preferred.
