The Structures Department is responsible for evaluating the structural integrity of National Security Space hardware, both spacecraft and launch vehicles as well as civil and commercial systems.  Members of the department have a strong foundation in solid mechanics, practical experience in structural analysis using both hand calculations and finite element analysis techniques, a passion for the space industry, and a desire to apply their expertise to help solve a variety of technical challenges.  The Structural Systems Section is responsible for assessing structural integrity of hardware such as pressurized hardware including requirements definitions, design review and assessment, simulation and analysis, test planning and monitoring, review of as-built hardware, and support of anomaly investigations. This section is also responsible for advanced concepts and technology development including multifunctional structures and structural health monitoring.  This section works closely with other engineering departments in conducting multi-disciplinary analyses to ensure mission success and to assist with developing future systems.


Key Functions:

  • Identify, evaluate, and resolve structural design and test issues, anomalies, and challenges across space structural systems.  Perform and/or coordinate detailed structural analyses to identify failure mechanisms and modes.
  • Develop and assess design criteria, requirements, and specifications for pressurized systems and mechanical interfaces.
  • Perform critical assessments of structural/mechanical designs and development plans during preliminary and detailed design phases of space vehicle programs. Participate in the development of analysis and verification plans.  Monitor contractors’ analysis and test programs.
  • Offer technical consultation and advice to management, customers, contractors, and government agencies in formulating and assessing test plans, procedures, objectives and success criteria that contribute to the development and execution of test programs for development, qualification, and acceptance of structures.  Provide real-time monitoring of test execution.
  • Perform critical reviews of flight hardware pedigree prior to launch.  Evaluate and assess all risks.
  • Initiate the development of advanced concepts and technology for structural design, test, and evaluation.  
  • Develop technology roadmaps for the transition of advanced concepts and technology including additive manufacturing.
  • Maintain state-of-the-art skills in activities related to design, evaluation, and testing of space structural systems. Skills include expertise in structural mechanics analysis techniques including fracture and fatigue, composite failure criteria, and advanced finite element analysis method.  
  • Take initiative to inform management of perceived technical problems and recommend courses of action.  Coordinate activities with both inter-organizational personnel, program office points of contact, and customer contacts when necessary to scope, plan and resolve technical issues.
  • Document work in accordance with corporate standards.  Provide timely technical recommendations to line management and customers by means of technical briefings and reports.


  • Advanced engineering degree 
  • Minimum of 10 years’ experience in structures analysis
  • Experience in the following areas:
    • Finite element analysis
    • Strength of materials
  • Demonstrated leadership skills 
  • Excellent oral and written communications skills are required
  • Some travel to contractor and customer facilities



  • PhD in advanced structural or solid mechanics
  • Experience in several of the following areas:
    • Design, qualification, and nonconformance assessment of pressurized systems including
    • Pressure Vessels
    • Composite Overwrap Pressure Vessels
    • Lines, Bellows, Valves, and Manifolds
    • Fracture Mechanics and Fatigue Analysis (Damage Tolerance/Safe Life Analysis and Fracture Control)
    • Additive manufacturing design integration, evaluation, and assessment
    • Welded joint mechanical properties and analysis
    • Nondestructive inspection criteria development
    • Bonded and/or bolted joint failure criteria and analysis methodologies
    • Composite structure failure criteria and analysis methodology
    • Probabilistic analysis and uncertainty quantification
    • Structural stability margin assessment
  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain excellent working relations with senior SMC, NRO, DoD, NASA, Aerospace, or contractor personnel
