The Aerospace Corporation is seeking a Sponsored Research Development Lead to design and implement a research development program, to support strategic R&D and mission initiatives, by capturing sponsored R&D opportunities in the commercial and government-industry sectors, and to establish corporate and academic alliances for research in basic materials science, propulsion science, materials processing , optical communications, applications of atomic physics (atomic clocks, quantum communications, and computing), space particles and fields, ionospheric and thermospheric physics, remote sensing, space instrumentation and testing, the effects of radiation, plasma, and the elements of the atmosphere and ionosphere on these technologies.


Key Functions

  • Help investigators in the Physical Sciences Laboratories (PSL) as well as the Engineering and Technology Group (ETG) in general, seeking external research funding through federal agency sponsored research sites like, FedBizOpps, NSPIRES NASA Research Opportunities in Space and Earth Science (ROSES), and other federal agency sponsored research databases
  • Assist investigators in refining their research and proposal development strategies to increase the likelihood of successful grant awards from government, private, and non-profit agencies
  • Serve as primary liaison and advocate for the ETG principal investigators to all Civil Systems Group (CSG) lines of business
  • Serve as the primary interface to Aerospace contracts, legal, pricing, proposal review teams and the community of Aerospace Principal Investigators (PIs)
  • Support Aerospace scientists and engineers to establish new research partnerships, pursue grants, facilitate and support the proposal preparation and submission process, and close on contracts for new research projects
  • Assist management in the evaluation, pursuit and capture of new research grant opportunities for the Aerospace research portfolio
  • Support multiple, concurrent pursuits of research opportunities through a structured pursuit and proposal development process
  • Review, update and maintain grant information and proposal pipeline databases on a regular basis
  • Promote Aerospace research agenda and cultivate Aerospace community of principal investigators, including outreach activities and one-on-one interactions
  • Work closely with Aerospace principal investigators to align research opportunities with corporate and customer strategic technical needs
  • Report and track: (1) performance against goals; (2) resource expenditure actuals vs. plan; (3) research grant opportunity pipeline and use of bid and proposal funding
  • Participate in budget planning and allocation of resources for expanding the Aerospace research portfolio
  • Report organization's activities, progress and achievements through written and oral reports to management and customers



  • Bachelor's degree in science or engineering or equivalent with at least 12 years of experience in science and technology projects or research
  • Experience-based knowledge of space-related science and technology
  • Experience developing and capturing federally funded science research opportunities for an FFRDC, UARC or federally funded laboratory
  • Experience managing bid and proposal budgets, allocations and reporting
  • Experience using enterprise class Customer Relationship Management (CRM) software with accountability for performance metrics
  • Ability and availability for domestic and international travel
  • Ability to obtain and maintain Secret clearance, which is issued by the U.S. government. U.S. citizenship is required



  • MS, MA, PhD in a scientific or engineering related field
  • Experience with Microsoft Dynamics 365 CRM
  • Significant demonstrated organizational and project management/leadership skills with the ability to lead multidisciplinary teams
  • Experience working within or with the Technology and Laboratory  Operations organization
  • Current TS/SCI
