Responsibilities

The Aerospace Corporation is seeking an early career Spacecraft Systems Engineer within the Vehicle Design and Innovation Department (VDID). They specialize in providing spacecraft systems engineering support to programs in all phases of acquisition, with a strong focus on the concept development phase. VDID is part of the Architecture and Design Subdivision, which is an interdisciplinary organization that performs space and launch system architecture, design, and analysis studies for AF, NRO, NASA, NOAA, and commercial customers. All of our projects are approached from the systems engineering perspective, drawing on and collaborating with technical experts throughout the Engineering and Technology Group matrix to best satisfy the needs of our customers. As a member of the VDID team, you will contribute to trade studies that will help define the future course of national security space, as well as inform NASA and commercial customers of their options in achieving the best value for the systems that they develop. This work will be performed in our offices located in El Segundo, CA; with domestic travel as required.

 

Key Functions

  • Lead and participate in multi-disciplinary engineering teams in the development and analysis of space vehicles
  • Lead and participate in conceptual and preliminary design studies of space systems
  • Evaluate spacecraft design and architecture concepts
  • Participate in design reviews
  • Provide vehicle system engineering support in the execution of customer programs
  • Work with government and program office personnel and members of ETG
  • Develop tools and models that support spacecraft design and analysis activities

 

This position is available as Member of Technical Staff or Sr. Member of Technical Staff 

Qualifications

Required

  • A Bachelor's degree in aerospace or mechanical engineering (or equivalent) from a recognized institution with two or more years experience related to spacecraft design
  • A Master's degree in aerospace engineering, mechanical engineering or related discipline from a recognized institution with 0-1 year of industry related experience to spacecraft design
  • Knowledge of systems engineering, space vehicle conceptual design and analysis, and concurrent engineering techniques, as well as application of these principles in support of space program acquisition
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively with Government customers, Aerospace program offices and contractors, and engineering staff across a broad range of disciplines
  • Ability to manage multiple simultaneous tasks and be flexible to changes in tasking
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Demonstrated personal initiative and ability to work independently
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DoD security clearance


Preferred 

  • An advanced degree in related field
  • Demonstrated knowledge in the development of spacecraft models and simulations to analyze vehicle design and performance
  • Extensive use of MS Office and other computer applications (e.g. Solidworks, STK, Matlab, etc) especially in support of space vehicle design and analysis
  • Current active TS/SCI clearance

 

Requirements for Sr. MTS

Required

  • A Bachelor's degree in aerospace or mechanical engineering (or equivalent) from a recognized institution with two or more years experience related to spacecraft design
  • A Master's degree in aerospace engineering, mechanical engineering or related discipline from a recognized institution and 5 years of industry experience related to spacecraft design
  • Knowledge of systems engineering, space vehicle conceptual design and analysis, and concurrent engineering techniques, as well as application of these principles in support of space program acquisition
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively with Government customers, Aerospace program offices and contractors, and engineering staff across a broad range of disciplines
  • Ability to manage multiple simultaneous tasks and be flexible to changes in tasking
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Demonstrated personal initiative and ability to work independently
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DoD security clearance
