Responsibilities

The Energy Technology Department's focus is to provide space and launch systems support including all cell, battery and energy storage technologies. The department performs independent verification and validation of flight battery systems aboard spacecraft and launch vehicles. Our multidisciplinary staff provides technical oversight, mission planning, research and development, satellite power system evaluation, acquisition, launch, and on-orbit operations.  The selected candidate will engage in exciting opportunities in spacecraft operation, battery flight system design and their applications. We provide excellent laboratory capabilities and maintain strong links to the U.S. and international space battery and energy storage community.

 

Key Functions

  • Independently evaluates, selects, and applies science / engineering techniques, procedures and criteria, using judgment in making adaptations and modifications
  • Contacts are primarily internal, with infrequent inter-organizational and outside customer contacts on routine matters
  • Engineering assignments:
    • Performs analytical studies
    • Conducts tests
    • Develops details of specifications
    • Prepares details of analytical report findings
    • Assists in planning and development of studies and design projects
  • Systems engineering assignments:
    • Provides scientific and engineering support
    • Assists senior scientists and engineers with research
    • Testing and evaluation of spacecraft batteries, solar cells and power systems
  • Project engineering assignments:
    • Supports senior staff in project design, research, analytical testing and evaluation
    • Conducts tests to include performance characterization, life prediction and failure analysis
    • Perform analysis of cell and battery test data in order to provide technical assessments
  • Technology assignments:
    • Assists in technology planning and development
    • Performs testing and evaluation of materials and devices
    • Develops procurement specifications and test procedures
    • Prepares details of analytical reports including preliminary findings and recommendations for spacecraft cell and battery system

 

This position can be filled as a Senior Member of Technical Staff or a Research Scientist/ Engineering Specialist.

Qualifications

Required

  • Master's degree in an engineering or scientific related field with 6 or more years of industry experience in battery science and engineering
  • Experience in physical chemistry, chemical engineering, material science or electro-chemistry
  • Experience in nickel and lithium based chemistry for batteries
  • Experience using laboratory instruments, power supplies, software and data acquisition systems for computer test control systems
  • Ability to travel as needed
  • This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance, which is issued by the U.S. government. U.S. citizenship is required to obtain a security clearance. 

 

Preferred

  • PHD degree in a science or engineering related field
  • Four or more years of experience in Li-Ion battery science or engineering
  • Three or more years of experience in battery flight system design and applications
  • Knowledge of programming languages (e.g., VB, C, C++, Labview, Java, Python)
  • Experience with computer controlled automated test systems

 

 

Requirements for Research Scientist/ Engineering Specialist

  • PHD degree in an engineering or scientific related field with 8 or more years of professional engineering or science experience
  • Experience in physical chemistry, chemical engineering, material science or electro-chemistry
  • Five or more years of experience in nickel and lithium based chemistry for batteries
  • Experience using laboratory instruments, power supplies, software and data acquisition systems for computer test control systems
  • Ability to travel as needed
  • This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance, which is issued by the U.S. government. U.S. citizenship is required to obtain a security clearance. 

 

Preferred for Research Scientist/ Engineering Specialist

  • PhD degree in Physical Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Electro-chemistry or Material Science
  • Six or more years of experience in Li-Ion battery science or engineering
  • Four or more years of experience in battery flight system design and applications

  • Experience with computer controlled automated test systems
