Responsibilities

The Project Development and Management Department is looking for a Senior Project Leader, who will be responsible for the planning and execution of hardware build projects. This person will lead and work with multi-functional, cross-organizational teams to design, build, test and deliver complex space science sensors and small satellite systems. The Project Leader works as part of a success-trio with the project systems engineer and project scientist.  The project manager on the team is responsible for planning and overseeing the day-to-day activity of matrixed engineering and science teams to meet project technical, schedule and cost goals. This role may also include ground-based or airborne test systems and helping to plan and execute both short and long term projects throughout the Corporation. This position requires innovative problem solving abilities as well as strong team building and leadership skills. As part of a small team, the Senior Project Leader has an active responsibility for ensuring day to day execution of the project plan, which may on any given day require organizing MRB/FRBs, developing/updating schedules, analyzing cost-data, replanning budgets, finding a piece of equipment, discussing options with team and customers, or anything else needed to help the team maintain a successful plan. Additional duties include: interfacing with program office and customer personnel, managing new business/proposals and working with program offices, labs and new business personnel in the development of program plans and pricing for new business activity.

 

Key Functions

  • Responsible for the timely delivery of specific project deliverables in accordance with project requirements (technical, cost & schedule)
  • Develop and maintain accurate plans for assigned projects
  • Manage multiple projects through all phases of development
  • Work with project teams to ensure work is performed in accordance with mission/project requirements and planned budgets and schedules
  • Manage road-blocks, work-arounds and unexpected events on projects to maintain optimal technical, cost and schedule performance
  • Manage project risks continuously throughout the activity within agreed-upon risk levels;
  • Work closely with Customers to ensure open communication and full understanding of risks and activity
  • Work with project teams to ensure product assurance requirements are met; negotiate changes/waivers/interpretations of requirements with customer personnel.
  • Manage and oversee major subcontractors on assigned projects to ensure optimum cost, schedule and technical performance on the subcontract
  • Work with Product Assurance and Parts Engineering staff to ensure accurate parts plans and parts lists are maintained for assigned projects and that appropriately screened parts are purchased and used in space flight programs
  • Create and present periodic status review packages to Customer and Aerospace Management
  • Create and maintain strong working relationships and lines of communication with both Customers and other team member organizations
  • Provide appropriate cost and schedule data to business management and budgets/finance staff to ensure project deliverable requirements are met
  • Develop and/or ensure development and compliant submission of assigned project deliverables
  • Work with assigned teams to develop project cost and schedule plans for new business proposals; work with Aerospace estimating and contracts teams to ensure compliant submission of new business proposals
  • Work with teams to develop tools to assist in accurate cost and schedule estimating and tracking

 

This position can be filled as a Project Leader or a Senior Project Leader.

Qualifications

Required

  • Bachelor's degree from a recognized institution and 8 years of space system development experience or over 12 years of work experience in space system development either in engineering or project/team leadership
  • Experience with spreadsheet and scheduling tools such as Microsoft Project or Primavera
  • Experience with use of database management systems 
  • Experience in development of design and project review packages and in leading/presenting reviews
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance, which is issued by the U.S. government. U.S. citizenship is required to obtain a security clearance.

 

Preferred

  • Experience with satellite systems, including knowledge of main components, assemblies, sub-assemblies as well as space environmental requirements
  • Knowledge and understanding of Aerospace procurement, property and business practices
  • Current and active Secret security clearance

 

 

Required for Senior Project Leader

  • Bachelor's degree from a recognized institution and 12 years of space system development experience or over 16 years of work experience in space system development either in engineering or project/team leadership
  • Experience with spreadsheet and scheduling tools such as Microsoft Project or Primavera
  • Experience with use of database management systems 
  • Experience in development of design and project review packages and in leading/presenting reviews
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance, which is issued by the U.S. government. U.S. citizenship is required to obtain a security clearance.

 

Preferred for Senior Project Leader

  • Experience with satellite systems, including knowledge of main components, assemblies, sub-assemblies as well as space environmental requirements
