Responsibilities

Summary
The business of launch and “new space” opportunities has never been this dynamic. The Aerospace Corporation is looking for a Launch Chief Engineer to join our Launch Chief Engineering Cadre. This presents an excellent opportunity for those forward-thinking individuals to apply their expertise, knowledge, drive and excitement towards the existing and future National Security Space (NSS) launch and integration endeavors. 

 

Key Functions

  • Provide independent and timely technical assessment to the entire Office of Space Launch (OSL) organization in all issues related to Launch, Launch Processing, Transportation, Anomaly resolution, investigations, dissemination of technical information
  • Represent OSL organization in evaluation and resolution of anomalies which may affect Launch Schedules, result in Mission Assurance risks, or which require knowledge and participation of OSL
  • Act in a Senior Technical advisor capacity to the Director of OSL, Deputy Director of OSL, OSL Chief Engineer, Launch Management Chief
  • Senior Technical Advisor to the Mission Assurance Team (MAT)
  • Lead independent and collaborative activities within Aerospace which support agile turnaround and rapid response for issue resolution, including the definition of independent tests and analysis to confirm hypotheses
  • Participation in Launch Rehearsals and Day of Launch activities in support of the OSL Mission Director and Deputy Mission Director
  • Interface with the various elements of Launch Program Operations and Aerospace Engineering Matrix Support (ETG) to address and inject Customer objectives and concerns which require Aerospace expertise
  • Act in a Technical Leadership capacity and engage the Aerospace Fellows in coordination and evaluation of significant technical issues 
  • Provide Contractors and Customer alike with insight and access to the Chief Engineer and other Aerospace Fellows to work extremely challenging issues
  • Mentor Aerospace Members of Technical Staff who wish to pursue technical career paths

Qualifications

Required:

  • An advanced degree (MS or PhD) in engineering, science, or related technical discipline from an accredited university
  • A minimum of 15 years of engineering experience and in-depth technical knowledge of current launch systems
  • Knowledge across heritage rocket systems (Delta IV & Atlas V) 
  • Knowledge of new entrant launch systems (Minotaur IV Falcon 9)
  • Out-of-the-box thinker, can establish practical experiments/paths forward to solve complex and time critical issues/anomalies
  • Ability to have rapid response agile risk mitigation approaches
  • Demonstrated exceptionally high level of innovation, creativeness, and initiative
  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with customers
  • Demonstrated ability to succinctly describe complex technical issues for senior leadership 
  • Current and active TS/SSBI/SCI 
  • This position requires the ability to have and maintain a security clearance, which is issued by the U.S. government.  U.S. citizenship is required to obtain a security clearance.


Preferred

  • Technical knowledge or experience with “new entrant” launch vehicles
  • Current or prior experience working with the Office of Space Launch (OSL) & the NRO
  • An understanding on how to leverage Aerospace Engineering Matrix Support (ETG)
  • Well established working relationships with launch vehicle contractor employees, Aerospace (LPO, ETG, PSL etc.), and/or NRO/OSL customer
  • Strong understanding of Aerospace Physical Laboratories capabilities and the demonstrated ability to develop laboratory tests to help in the resolution of technical issues
