The Photonics Technology Department at the Aerospace Corporation has an opening for a highly motivated scientist to lead the Atomic, Materials, and Device Physics Section as Section Manager.  The section's research and program support activities are well-established and supported by highly trained and accomplished staff.

Key Functions:

  • The successful applicant will provide strategic and administrative guidance to technical staff for the organization, execution, and archival documentation of technical activities.  This person may individually lead the development of internal and external programs.  Individual participation in research projects may be required in some instances and is generally encouraged.
  • The successful applicant will work as needed with the Department Director and Division management to develop and implement organizational R&D and program support strategies.
  • Duties will minimally include supervision of section personnel, assignments of staff to projects, monitoring and evaluation of project progress, administration of APIP, communication and implementation of corporate policies, and general administration of section business including financial tracking and maintenance of the Section ATIP portfolio.
  • The individual will work with/mentor technical staff to establish interfaces with internal and external collaborators, and/or individually develop external collaborations and contract programs.



  • Minimum qualifications include a Bachelor's degree in physics, chemistry, electrical engineering or a closely related field, with at least five years work experience in that topic area. 
  • The successful candidate must be highly motivated and goal oriented with strong interpersonal skills and an ability to work in inter-organizational and inter-disciplinary teams. 
  • Candidates should have a strong background in one or more of the following areas: atomic physics, applied physics, laser spectroscopy, laser technology, photonics and integrated photonics, and applications in these topic areas.  
  • Candidate must be able to obtain and maintain DOD security clearances.    
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with all levels of customers and corporate staff



  • PhD degree strongly preferred.
  •  Experience in project or program leadership is strongly desired.
  • Experience in Program support on issues regarding current or emerging space technologies is strongly desired.
  • SCI strongly preferred.
