Responsibilities

SUMMARY OF RESPONSIBILITIES

The Lidar and Sensor Calibration Section at The Aerospace Corporation is seeking an Undergraduate Intern for an internship opportunity.  As an intern in the Photonics Technology Department, successful applicants will participate in the design, construction, and operation of laboratory and field experiments designed to advance applications of laser technology in support of space systems.  Duties will include the construction and alignment of laboratory and field instruments, experimental set-up and execution, data analysis and preparation of reports.  The diverse portfolio of experiments will provide motivated applicants with a considerable opportunity for the acquisition of new knowledge and skills.

 

KEY FUNCTIONS

  • Collaborates with engineers on laboratory testing. Refines test designs as needed.
  • Participates with an interdisciplinary team in ongoing research or technical programs.
  • Writes test procedures and equipment operational procedures to support existing and new lab tests or facilities.
  • Ensures that all safety rules and regulations are being followed. Attends necessary laboratory safety training.
  • The selected candidate will be expected to participate as needed in offsite field campaigns.
  • Training and mentorship will be provided.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Currently enrolled at an accredited college/university degree program pursuing a Bachelor's degree in Physics, Chemistry, Optics or related program
  • Completion of freshman, sophomore, junior, or senior undergraduate study with a strong academic record
  • Minimum GPA 3.0
  • Must be able to obtain a security clearance
  • US Citizenship required
  • Ability to work under minimal supervision, to self-initiate activities, and to work within timelines

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience in CAD software such as Solidworks and machining 
  • Knowledge and/or exposure to programming languages in Matlab, Labview, C++, Python or other scientific software
  • Experience in electronics fabrication
  • Highly motivated and able to work independently with minimal supervision
  • Ability to quickly troubleshoot problems and prioritize tasks and projects
  • Practical experience with lasers and optical systems
  • Experience operating and maintaining sensitive electronics equipment
  • Willingness to travel and work in a diverse set of work environments
