Responsibilities

We are seeking Optical Communications Engineers and Technologists. Our department supports a wide variety of Government customers and organizations. We provide analysis and simulation capabilities, as well as some hardware engineering support. The respective areas of responsibility will be in analysis, simulation and hardware.

 

When you join our Optical Communications Office, you’ll be part of a dedicated group of Optical Communication systems engineers and hardware specialists who are at the fulcrum point of influencing the future of National Security Space Optical Communications.  Our unique position as consultant to our customers allows you to have an immediate and significant impact in driving national technical directions and decisions.  The knowledge brought to bear on these challenges is backed by your modeling and/or hardware/testbed efforts generated and validated in our growing optical communications laboratory.  Let’s link up! 

 

Key Functions

  • Participate in teams with other Lasercom and photonics members of the technical staff.
  • Provide ongoing technical consultation and advice to management, customers, and contractors in this area of specialization.
  • Participate in or initiate studies designed to solve new technical problems and provide new optical communication and photonics technical solutions within this area of expertise, as well as perform long-range technical studies and report findings.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of appropriate modulation and coding formats for the application.
  • Generate Lasercom system designs down to the photonics component level.
  • Measure characteristics of photonic components, when these characteristics are not available from the vendor.
  • Take initiative to inform management of perceived technical problems and recommend courses of action.
  • Participate or may lead cross-organizational teams and organize interfaces with customers and/or Aerospace program offices.
  • May bring in tasks and projects beyond personal activities from internal and external sources.
  • Act as the organization's designated representative at technical meetings, presentations, and symposia.
  • Represent the department and sub-division with technical presentations, oversee existing projects, and possess the ability to work effectively within the range of our divisional customers.
  • The Optical Communications Engineer will be expected to:
    • Evaluate and develop photonic communications or signal processing engineering technologies.
    • Analyze and simulate complex free-space optical communications, signal-processing, or networking systems.
  • The Optical Communications Technologist will be expected to:
    •  Evaluate and develop photonic device technologies.

    • Analyze and simulate photonic device performance and behavior.

 

This position can be filled as an Aerospace Corporation Senior Member of the Technical Staff or Engineering Specialist

Qualifications

Required

  • Bachelor of Science degree or higher in Electrical Engineering, Optical Sciences, or another related technical field from an accredited university.
  • A minimum of five years experience in progressively more responsible roles.
  • This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a Top Secret/SSBI security clearance, which is issued by the U.S. government.  U.S. citizenship is required to obtain this level of security clearance.
  • The Optical Communications Engineer will be required to have:
    • Experience with systems engineering support in optical space and ground network systems.
    • Experience in optical communications system analysis and simulation.
  • The Optical Communications Technologist will be required to have:
    • Experience with optical communication and photonic components used in space and ground networks.
    • Experience in optical communication and photonic component measurement and technology. 

 

Preferred

  • Master of Science or Ph.D. degree or higher in Electrical Engineering, Optical Sciences, or another related technical field from an accredited university.
  • Competence in understanding state-of-the-art, relevant communications and signal-processing techniques.
  • Experience with digital signal-processing analysis and simulation.
  • Ability to resolve communication issues associated with various systems.
  • The Optical Communications Engineer will have experience in one or more of the following:
    • Modulation/Demodulation
    • Encoding/Decoding
  • The Optical Communications Technologist will have experience in one or more of the following:
    • Photonics Device Characterization
    • Photonics Manufacturing

 

 

Qualifications for consideration as an Engineering Specialist

Required

  • Bachelor of Science degree or higher in Electrical Engineering, Optical Sciences, or another related technical field from an accredited university.
  • A minimum of 8 years experience in progressively more responsible roles.
  • This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a Top Secret/SSBI security clearance, which is issued by the U.S. government.  U.S. citizenship is required to obtain this level of security clearance.
  • The Optical Communications Engineer will be required to have:
    • Proven experience with systems engineering support in optical space and ground network systems.
    • Proven experience in optical communications system analysis and simulation.
  • The Optical Communications Technologist will be required to have:
    • Proven experience with optical communication and photonic components used in space and ground networks.
    • Proven experience in optical communication and photonic component measurement and technology. 

 

Preferred

  • Leadership experience within systems engineering support in optical space and ground network systems.
