Responsibilities

The selected candidate will serve as the Demonstration and Technology Department’s Payload Systems Engineer to support the Overhead Persistent Infrared (OPIR) Next Generation Block 1 Prototype Payload program, as well as the Wide-Field-of-View (WFOV) Testbed program, and several OPIR payload technology maturation projects.   The purpose of the Next Generation Block 1 Prototype Payload program is to reduce risk for the Block 1 program-of-record payload and will include enhanced performance and resiliency features.  The Air Force is in the process of awarding contracts for Phase 1 of the effort which will conclude with a payload PDR for multiple vendors.  Payload systems engineering will be critical for successful program execution and it is expected that this program will the primary responsibility for the position. The WFOV program is a free-flying testbed with a wide-field-of-view OPIR staring sensor and is completing system level integration in preparation for launch in early 2021.  Payload systems engineering support for WFOV could include system level requirements verification, on-orbit calibration, and mission operations.  Several smaller scale efforts are underway to support OPIR payload component level technology maturation.   These efforts will periodically need systems engineering support to review the benefit of new technologies, define component requirements, and review progress. 

 

Key Functions

  • Provide in-depth payload systems engineering to the Next Gen Block 1 Prototype.
    • Assess concept architectures, requirements allocation and, preliminary design of OPIR payloads
    • Partner with the Engineering and Technology Group (ETG) subject matter experts to maximize Aerospace’s value and ensure appropriate coverage at key reviews
    • Lead technical teams to assess mission impact of various program decisions that result from concept trades, technology transition, sensor performance shortfalls, etc.
    • Identify risks and develop recommended mitigation strategies
  • Provide payload systems engineering support to the WFOV Testbed and various technology maturation projects (e.g., focal plane arrays, high speed processors) as needed
  • Work closely and effectively with the Air Force customer and the SETA support team
  • Utilize sound engineering judgment supported by objective technical rationale to provide balanced cost, schedule, and technical recommendations
  • Communicate effectively to Air Force and Aerospace leadership
  • Support mission assurance functions and contribute to agile approaches for the Department’s multiple efforts having varying risk tolerance

 

This position can be filled as an OPIR Payload Systems Engineer or Sr. OPIR Systems Engineer.

Qualifications

Required for OPIR Payload Systems Project Engineer

  • Bachelor's Degree in science, mathematics or engineering from an accredited institution
  • 8 or more years of increasingly responsible engineering, scientific, or space system program experience
  • 8 or more years of systems engineering experience with one or more of the following: spacecraft, payloads, and/or ground systems
  • Experience managing and leading teams/projects, handling multiple tasks and working closely with Government customers, contractors, and other FFRDCs
  • Excellent verbal, written and presentation skills
  • Moderate Travel
  • Active/current Secret security clearance with ability to obtain and maintain a Top Secret/SCI security clearance

 

 

Required for OPIR Payload Systems Sr. Project Engineer

  • Bachelor's Degree in science, mathematics or engineering from an accredited institution
  • 12 or more years of increasingly responsible engineering, scientific, or space system program experience
  • 12 or more years of systems engineering experience with one or more of the following: spacecraft, payloads, and/or ground systems
  • Experience managing and leading teams/projects, handling multiple tasks and working closely with Government customers, contractors, and other FFRDCs
  • Excellent verbal, written and presentation skills
  • Moderate Travel
  • Active/current Secret security clearance with ability to obtain and maintain a Top Secret/SCI security clearance

 

 

Preferred

  • Advanced degree in science, mathematics or engineering from an accredited institution
  • Experience in space-related systems such as SBIRS, GPS, MILSATCOM, AFSCN, or Space Launch
  • Experience in design, analysis, test, and integration of electro-optical payloads
  • Experience working with program office personnel on Space and Missile Systems Center (SMC), National Reconnaissance Office (NRO) space systems, Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) or NASA/NOAA space systems
  • Active TS/SCI security clearance
