Responsibilities

Acts as senior technical authority, consultant, primary investigator, and team leader in support of evaluating launch vehicle providers to launch National Security Space missions in the Alternative Launch Vehicle (ALV) Directorate. May lead or organize interactions between the customer (Air Force), Aerospace technical staff and contractors for Mechanical Systems related topics and issues. Coordinate large-scale technical efforts across program/project lines.

 

This position can be filled at a level 2 (PE) or a level 3 (Sr. PE). 

 

 

Key Functions

  • Manage technical activities associated with evaluating mechanical systems used by launch vehicle providers

    • Includes moving mechanical assemblies used in vehicle separation systems, vehicle to ground system interfaces and separation mechanisms, and propulsion thrust vector control systems

    • May also include ordnance initiated mechanical systems

  • Coordinate multi-discipline engineering team efforts to ensure that launch vehicle mechanical system designs, analysis, testing and documentation are compliant with Air Force requirements

  • Lead and facilitate collaborative efforts between the Air Force and launch vehicle providers to evaluate their vehicle designs, qualification and operational capability

  • Provide technical advice and recommendations to resolve or mitigate risk associated with mechanical systems used on vehicles to launch National Security Space missions

  • Effectively communicate status and progress of technical activities, issues, and accomplishments through reports and briefings to Aerospace, Air Force, and contractor teams

  • Build and maintain close working relationships with the Aerospace team, Air Force counterparts, contractor responsible engineers, and representatives from other government agencies

  • Work with management to develop resource allocations plans and schedules as needed

Qualifications

Required Qualifications for Level 2 (PE)

  • B.S. in mechanical engineering/structural mechanics or related field from a recognized institution
  • 8 or more years of applicable experience with increasing responsibility
  • Familiarity with design and/or testing of mechanism and mechanical systems (e.g. moving mechanical assemblies, hydraulic actuators, pneumatic systems)
  • Must have experience coordinating and/or participating in multi-disciplinary technical team efforts
  • Must be a U.S. citizen with a current Secret clearance or ability to obtain a clearance

 

Required Qualifications for Level 3 (Sr. PE)

  • B.S. in mechanical engineering/structural mechanics or related field from a recognized institution
  • 12 or more years of applicable experience with increasing responsibility
  • Familiarity with design and/or testing of mechanism and mechanical systems (e.g. moving mechanical assemblies, hydraulic actuators, pneumatic systems)
  • Must have experience coordinating technical team efforts
  • Must be a U.S. citizen with a current Secret clearance or ability to obtain a clearance
  • Must have experience leading team comprised of diversely skilled engineers servicing a major portion of a large project or working across projects, and interfaces regularly with customer and contractor program management

 

Preferred

  • MS degree in mechanical engineering/structural mechanics or related field from a recognized institution
  • Experience with testing and/or analysis of mechanical systems used on launch vehicle (e.g. separation systems, thrust vector control, etc.)
  • Experience with systems engineering and verification of requirements
  • Experience with modeling and simulation of dynamic events (e.g. stage separation)
  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with team members and customers
  • Effective interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively and efficiently work independently with minimal supervision
  • Knowledge and experience with Aerospace launch verification processes
