The Materials Processing Department consists of the Advanced Materials Section and Materials Physics and Nondestructive Evaluation Section. Staff in the Advanced Materials Section focus on the development of thin films and coatings of spacecraft optical components as well as testing these components under simulated space environments that the spacecraft might experience in during its service life. The staff in the Materials Physics and Nondestructive Evaluation Section focuses on evaluating the structural integrity of spacecraft and launch vehicle components, failure investigation, and developing new Nondestructive Evaluation techniques when needed.  Responsible for providing technical support associated with various types of measurement, equipment calibration, and inspection.


Key Functions

  • The chief duty is to provide analytical and laboratory support to programs investigating spacecraft material properties in the Materials Processing Department.
  • The successful candidate will be required to work closely with the technical staff to design, build or modify laboratory apparatus intended to test and/or characterize optical materials.
  • The successful candidate will be required to perform materials characterization tests, particularly with respect to optical properties.
  • The position requires creative solutions to diverse technical problems.
  • The successful candidate will also be required to maintain and operate various specialized vacuum deposition or space environmental effects simulation systems.
  • The position may also require interaction with vendors, data reduction, and some report preparation.
  • The successful candidate may also be required to utilize a corporate-issued credit card (P-card) to procure equipment, instrumentation, materiel, consumables, etc. in support of Departmental efforts.
  • The candidate may be required to support more than one team in more one technical area of the department as needs arise.



  • Bachelor's degree in engineering, physical sciences or related discipline
  • Experience working in a laboratory 
  • Experience in one or more of the following: high-vacuum systems, lasers and optical systems, automation, electrical circuits, mechanical drawing, PLC control, pneumatic actuation or computer interfacing and machine shop technology
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. security clearance, which is issued by the U.S. government. U.S. citizenship is required



  • Bachelor's degree in Material Science
  • Experience in Labview and Solidworks
  • Electro-mechanical skills
