Responsibilities

The Vehicle Engineering Department provides end-to-end engineering analyses and technical support for space and launch vehicles as well as system of systems: from vehicle simulations and geolocation, to assessment of subsystem interactions, special test equipment support and mass properties calculations. The Vehicle Mass and Mechanical Properties Section leads the space industry in the prediction, computation and verification of mass properties; including assessment of uncertainty and impact of configuration changes.

 

Key Functions

  • Independently conducts long-range technical studies related to Mass Properties of space and launch vehicles and reports findings
  • Initiates studies designed to verify and predict mass, center of gravity, moment and product of inertia of subsystem and systems 
  • Provides ongoing technical consultation and advice to management, customers, and contractors in area of Mass Properties 
  • Tracks vehicle weight growth and technical performance measurements (TPM) as programs evolve, while contributing to Aerospace’s weight growth model 
  • Evaluates programs compliance with specifications and Mass Properties industry standards 
  • Examines design alternatives to solve Mass Properties related problems and provides innovative solutions 
  • Reviews test plans and validate test results including independent data reduction 
  • Takes initiative to inform management of perceived technical problems and recommends courses of action 
  • Acts as Aerospace’s Mass Properties designated representative at Mass Properties control boards, technical meetings, presentations, and symposia

 

This position could be filled as a Senior Member of Technical Staff or an Engineering Specialist.

Qualifications

Required

  • Bachelor's degree in an engineering or scientific field with at least five years space vehicle experience in mass properties or space vehicle production
  • Experience validating test results including independent data reduction
  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with customers, program offices, and contractors
  • Experience providing independent evaluations
  • Experience in systems engineering, integration and test
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DoD and SCI security clearance, which is issued by the U.S. government. U.S. citizenship is required to obtain a security clearance

 

Preferred

  • Advanced degree in Mechanical, Aerospace Engineering and/or Engineering Physics
  • A proven history of applying engineering skills and industry standards to the resolution of problems
  • Experience with DoD, NRO, NASA programs and procedures; unmanned aerial vehicles and/or missiles
  • Current SCI clearance, or DoD TS or SAR
  • Experience evaluating program compliance with specifications and industry standards
  • Recognized internally and externally by peers, management, program office, Air Force and contractors

 

 

Required for Engineering Specialist

  • Bachelor's degree in an engineering or scientific field with at least eight years space vehicle experience in mass properties or space vehicle production
  • Experience validating test results including independent data reduction
  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with customers, program offices, and contractors
  • Experience providing independent evaluations
  • Experience in systems engineering, integration and test
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DoD and SCI security clearance, which is issued by the U.S. government. U.S. citizenship is required to obtain a security clearance
