Responsibilities

The Mechanical System Department is a diverse team that focuses on assuring the integrity and reliability of moving mechanical assemblies (MMAs), ordnance driven devices and other explosive applications. Actuation of the mechanism, bearing endurance, or the physics behind a high-energy reaction are non-traditional, complex problems evaluated through tribal knowledge and unique analysis tools. MSD members utilize advanced modeling tools and develop internal analysis programs to provide the most effective technical and programmatic mission assurance activities on satellite, launch vehicle and related systems.

 

Key Functions

  • Performs design, analyses, modeling and independent review of space, launch and reentry vehicles and other mechanical subsystems
  • Support hardware integration and test activities associated with space moving mechanical assemblies (MMAs)
  • Review and evaluate mechanisms test plans, test data, analyses, and results
  • Provide technical support in technical exchange meetings, design reviews, and hardware acceptance reviews
  • Develop solutions to technical problems in mechanical engineering, chemical physics and other ordnance and material related fields
  • Use existing tools or develop new tools to assess mechanical or explosive component design
  • Prepare reports and deliver oral presentations as needed
  • Some travel required

Qualifications

Required

  • Master's of Science degree in Physics, Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering or a related engineering or science field
  • 0-1 year of industry related experience
  • Experience in solving complex mechanical engineering problems
  • Experience with Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint on PC and/or Mac
  • Experience multitasking effectively, independently and in a team environment
  • This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance, which is issued by the U.S. government. U.S. citizenship is required to obtain a security clearance.

 

Preferred

  • Experience in design, analysis, and testing of space MMAs, explosive-driven components, and other explosive applications
  • Experience analyzing engineering systems to quantify design robustness based on physical justifications
  • Experience accessing the design and actuation of valves
  • Experience with hydrocode analysis tools such as CTH, LS-DYNA, ADAMS, Cheetah
  • Experience in material science and chemistry pertaining to MMAs
  • Initiative, creativity, decision-making ability
  • Current Secret clearance with the ability to obtain a TS/SCI security clearance
