Responsibilities

The Photonics Technology Department at The Aerospace Corporation has an opening for highly motivated engineers or scientists to support technology and application development programs in applied atomic physics, optoelectronic material and device physics, laser technology development, and laser applications. As a member of the Photonics Technology Department, successful applicants will participate in the design, construction, and execution of laboratory and field experiments designed to mature and optimize analytical capabilities and new device technology in the listed areas for space systems. Duties will include the construction and alignment of laboratory and field instruments, experimental set-up and execution, data analysis and preparation of reports. The diverse portfolio of experiments will provide applicants with initiative considerable opportunity for the acquisition of knowledge and skills.

 

Key Functions

  • Support and collaborate with technical staff members on laboratory R&D, technology demonstrations, and field campaigns
  • Write test procedures and equipment operational procedures to support existing and new lab tests or facilities 
  • Maintain laboratory equipment. Build, repair, and ensure the calibration of equipment. Set up experimental systems and instrumentation for lab R&D. 
  • Ensure that all safety rules and regulations are followed. Maintain training in laboratory safety processes and procedures.
  • Researches and recommends tools and equipment for capital purchases 

 

This position can be filled as a Photonics Technology Specialist II or III.

Qualifications

Required

  • Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, physics, chemistry, optics, or a closely related field with 2 or more years of lab experience 
  • Experience troubleshooting problems and prioritizing tasks and projects 
  • Writing and proofreading skills adequate for the composition of technical reports, presentations, and peer literature manuscripts.
  • This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance, which is issued by the U.S. government. U.S. citizenship is required to obtain a security clearance. 

 

Preferred

  • Experience in electronics fabrication, instrument control, and programming (C++, LabView, or Python) is strongly desired. 
  • Experience with numerical analyses using programming environments such as Matlab, graphical software such as Origin
  • Practical experience with lasers and optical systems 
  • Experience operating and maintaining sensitive electronics equipment

 

Required for Photonics Technology Specialist III

  • Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, physics, chemistry, optics, or a closely related field with five or more years of lab experience 
  • Experience with numerical analyses using programming environments such as Matlab or Silvaco, graphical software such as Origin 
  • Writing and proofreading skills adequate for the composition of technical reports, presentations, and peer literature manuscripts. 
  • Knowledge and/or experience with TCAD layout and simulation software for photonic integration and/or optoelectronic devices 

 

Preferred for Photonics Technology Specialist III

  • Experience in electronics fabrication, instrument control, and programming (C++, LabView, or Python) is strongly desired. 
  • Significant experience with lasers and optical systems 
  • Experience operating and maintaining sensitive electronics equipment
