Provides professional engineering/scientific support within (research and development) engineering, systems engineering, project engineering, or technology functions/ organizations.   The Guidance Analysis Department (GAD) provides the design and analysis support for guidance, navigation, and control (GN&C) for launch vehicles and upper stages.  GAD is responsible for GN&C system validation, targeting, trajectory performance, and mission certification.  GAD fulfills a systems engineering and integration role for the respective disciplines.  The department is dedicated to achieving total mission success while maintaining the highest level of integrity and technical excellence.



Key Functions

  • Independently evaluates, selects, and applies engineering techniques, procedures and criteria, using judgment in making adaptations and modifications. Assignments typically have specified objectives. Contacts are primarily internal, with infrequent inter-organizational and outside customer contacts on routine matters
  • Engineering assignments: Performs analytical studies, conducts tests, develops details of specifications, prepares details of analytical report findings, assists in planning and development of studies and design projects
  • Systems engineering assignments: Participates in development of program interfaces between hardware and computer systems; diagnoses both hardware and software simulation tool problems; designs improvements to simulation environments; develops and/or revises programs for data reduction and analysis
  • Project engineering assignments: Performs analytical studies, conducts integration tests, and develops details of acquisition hardware/software and database specifications
  • Technology assignments: Assists in technology planning and development; performs testing and evaluation of materials and devices; develops procurement specifications and test procedures; prepares details of analytical reports, including preliminary findings and recom mendations 
  • Perform engineering analyses of launch and upper-stage vehicle guidance and navigation systems, including performance of guidance algorithms and use of inertial systems, GPS, and other sensors
  • Perform trajectory studies and conduct error and orbital perturbation analyses
  • Perform statistical analyses of launch vehicle trajectories and targeting accuracy
  • Develop mathematical models and high-fidelity computational simulations of launch vehicles from fundamental principles of dynamics and physics
  • Develop computational tools to analyze the performance of launch vehicle guidance and navigation systems
  • Study and evaluate launch vehicle guidance and navigation designs and algorithms
  • Analyze control system performance, develop and perform linear stability analyses, time and frequency domain simulations
  • Prepare technical reports and briefings to be presented to the customer



  • Bachelor's degree in aerospace engineering, mechanical engineering, computer science or related field
  • Advanced undergraduate-level knowledge in the following areas:
    • Guidance, navigation, and control of aerospace vehicles
    • Rigid-body kinematics and dynamics
    • Flight dynamics and orbital mechanics
    • Mathematical modeling and development of computer-based vehicle simulations
  • Intermediate to advanced knowledge of the following computer platforms and programming languages:
    • Microsoft Windows and Office
    • MATLAB
    • Simulink
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. Department of Defense security clearance.  U.S. citizenship is required to obtain a security clearance.



  • 2 or more years of industrial experience (or a graduate degree) in guidance, navigation, and control of aerospace vehicles, trajectory performance analysis, and targating accuracy studies
  • Advanced undergraduate-level knowledge of statistical analyses
  • Intermediate to advanced knowledge of the following computer platforms and programming languages:
    • Unix / Linux
    • C++
    • Python
