Responsibilities

SUMMARY OF RESPONSIBILITIES

The Aerospace Corporation is seeking a Guidance and Navigation Graduate Intern for an internship opportunity. This position will be located in El Segundo, CA.

The qualified candidate will become part of the Guidance Analysis Department (GAD), which provides the design and analysis support for guidance, navigation, and control (GN&C) for launch vehicles and upper stages.  GAD is responsible for GN&C system validation, targeting, trajectory performance, and mission certification.  GAD fulfills a systems engineering and integration role for the respective disciplines.  The department is dedicated to achieving total mission success while maintaining the highest level of integrity and technical excellence

 

KEY FUNCTIONS

  • Perform engineering analyses of launch and upper-stage vehicle guidance and navigation systems, including performance of guidance algorithms and use of inertial systems, GPS, and other sensors
  • Perform trajectory studies and conduct error and orbital perturbation analyses
  • Perform statistical analyses of launch vehicle trajectories and targeting accuracy
  • Develop mathematical models and high-fidelity computational simulations of launch vehicles from fundamental principles of dynamics and physics
  • Develop computational tools to analyze the performance of launch vehicle guidance and navigation systems
  • Study and evaluate launch vehicle guidance and navigation designs and algorithms
  • Participates with an interdisciplinary team in ongoing research or technical programs with academic collaboration partners
  • Applies standard techniques and procedures to carry out a series of prescribed scientific and/or engineering tasks
  • Training and mentorship will be provided

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree completed and currently enrolled at an accredited college/university degree program pursuing a graduate degree in aerospace engineering, mechanical engineering, computer science or related program
  • Must be able to obtain a security clearance
  • US Citizenship required
  • Advanced undergraduate-level knowledge in the following areas:
    • Guidance, navigation, and control of aerospace vehicles
    • Rigid-body kinematics and dynamics
    • Flight dynamics and orbital mechanics
    • Mathematical modeling and development of computer-based vehicle simulations
  • Intermediate to advanced knowledge of the following computer platforms and programming languages:
    • Microsoft Windows and Office
    • MATLAB
    • Simulink

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Advanced undergraduate-level knowledge of statistical analyses
  • Intermediate to advanced knowledge of the following computer platforms and programming languages:
    • Unix / Linux
    • C++
    • Python
    • FORTRAN
