Responsibilities

The Flight Mechanics Department performs high-fidelity 3 Degrees of Freedom (3DOF) trajectory analysis for launch vehicles, spacecraft, reentry vehicles, ballistic missiles and hypersonic vehicles. This work can be performed for existing programs as well as for proposed or emerging concepts. Optimal control, hypersonics, and resiliency are the key areas looking forward. As the Flight Mechanics Associate Director, you will be vital in aligning concepts between our internal Aerospace departments and the customer, while also directing activities to push new and emerging ideas forward.

 

Key Functions

  • Provide resiliency and hypersonics centers of excellence
  • Foster increasing level of high-fidelity resiliency simulation capability (cleared staff, expertise)
  • New business development in the department's growth areas
  • Manage department research portfolio (ATIP, iLab Ventures, etc.)
  • Coordinate with the System Engineering Division (SED) System Analysis and Simulation Subdivision (SASS) on resource allocation and tasking
  • Spearhead department efforts to grow presence at other Aerospace locations, such as Colorado Springs
  • Supervise in-house software tool development activities

Qualifications

Required

  • Bachelor’s degree in a science or engineering related field
  • Experience with trajectory simulation, optimization theory and implementation, and optimal control theory and implementation
  • Basic programming ability in one or more compiled computer languages such as: C, C++, or Fortran
  • Basic programming ability in one or more computer scripting languages such as: Python, Matlab, or Perl
  • Experience with hypersonic trajectory design
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Top Secret/SCI clearance, which is issued by the U.S. government. U.S. citizenship is required

 

Preferred

  • 12 or more years of progressively responsible professional engineering/scientific experience
  • Experience using the Unix operating system
  • Experience working in classified computing environments
  • Experience with parallel computing environments, including parallelized scripting of simulation tools
  • Demonstrated history of effective communication with customer personnel, including senior decision makers
  • Effective cross-organization and cross-program communication and coordination skills
