The Aerospace Corporation is seeking an Engineering Manager for a leadership opportunity in the area of software systems engineering. This position will be located at in El Segundo, California. The qualified candidate will join the management team of the Software Systems Assurance Department in the Computers and Software Division, where you will support software engineering projects for mission-critical space systems, notably ground control networks and vehicle flight software.


The department's core mission is to develop novel analytical tools and apply world-class expertise to provide responsive mission assurance assessments across the full engineering life cycle. 



Assists the director in coordinating activities and operations in the Software Systems Assurance Department. Participates in day-to-day accomplishment of department tasks through a combination of individual technical contributions, leadership of small teams, and collaboration with the technical, managerial, and program office communities. Helps define and execute department strategy, including hiring plans, new business opportunities, and investments in technical capability.


Key Functions

  • Conduct technical analyses and contribute to mission assurance assessments for software systems within launch vehicles, spacecraft, ground systems, missiles, and other mission-critical elements of national space infrastructure. Spearhead development and adoption of innovative analysis tools & techniques to improve the quality, efficiency, and responsiveness of those assessments.
  • Provide technical leadership to desktop software and web application development projects, typically involving data visualization, laboratory automation, or analysis of software requirements/design/code/test artifacts.
  • Identify, evaluate, and pursue opportunities for new business.  Provide task planning, schedule, and labor estimates for proposed work assignments. Identify the needs and capabilities of key resources. Work closely with stakeholders to coordinate tasking, facilitate communication, report progress, resolve technical issues, and ensure project success.
  • Recommend staffing needs and evaluate potential staff additions, promotions, reassignments, transfers, and terminations. Execute employee performance improvement processes, career development activities, and rewards programs (e.g. compensation, awards/recognition). Participate in recruiting, networking, and outreach activities.
  • Proactively maintain supportive interpersonal relationships with staff to foster multidirectional mentoring and open collaboration. Promote a workplace culture that is consistent with the mission, vision, core values, and strategic objectives of the organization. 


Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Aerospace Engineering, or related technical discipline from a recognized institution


Required Qualifications

  • 8-12 years of increasingly responsible pertinent experience (including graduate studies) is typical for this position.
  • Software development experience, including experience with industry-standard programming languages and development tools
  • Software testing experience, including unit-level testing, integration testing, and/or formal qualification testing
  • Experience working with national security space acquisition programs, e.g. launch vehicles, spacecraft, satellite control networks, and/or missile defense systems 


Preferred Qualifications

  • Proficiency in Java, C++, JavaScript (MEAN stack), Python, VBA, or similar programming language(s)
  • Technical familiarity with any of the following:
    • Project management and collaboration tools, e.g. Atlassian suite, SharePoint
    • Cloud computing platforms and enterprise computing applications
    • Information assurance and cyber security mechanisms
    • Requirements management tools, e.g. DOORS, DOORS Next Generation
    • Model-based systems engineering tools & techniques
    • Embedded software applications
    • Agile software development paradigms
  • Project experience in any of the following:
    • Development, testing, and sustainment of flight software or ground systems for launch vehicles, spacecraft, or missiles
    • Independent program milestone readiness reviews
    • Mission assurance risk assessments
  • Business experience in any of the following:
    • Preparing business case proposals, estimating cost and schedule, and demonstrating value to potential customers
    • Tracking complex tasks, gathering and reporting progress metrics, and coordinating efforts across small to medium-sized teams (i.e. 3-20 people)
    • Preparing briefing materials, delivering verbal reports, and writing professional-quality documentation for diverse technical and nontechnical audiences
    • Participating in organizational development and career enrichment activities, e.g. recruiting, mentoring, networking, training
  • Effective, flexible communication and interpersonal skills; ability to develop & maintain effective working relationships with diverse team members and external contacts
  • Professional interest in organizational strategy, workplace culture, and innovation
  • Active DoD Secret or TS/SCI security clearance
