Responsibilities

The Mechanical Engineering and Fabrication Department develops hardware for next-generation prototypes. We design, build and test complex mechanical systems. We also design and assemble circuit board assemblies. As an Electro-Mechanical Lab Technician, you would put the finishing touches on circuit board assemblies, integrate mechanical systems, and maintain laboratory equipment within the Technology Demonstration Center.

The Technology Demonstration Center is responsible for developing prototypes, instruments, pathfinders, and demonstration systems to address customer hard problems. We engage with potential customers during concept development, evolve to project definition, fabrication and execution, and support the transition of new technology and capability to industry partners where applicable. Our team develops the advanced prototypes that will inform the next generation of ground and space-based sensors.

Key Functions

  • Apply primer, paints, and optical/thermal coatings to flight systems; mask parts for painting; prepare witness samples as required
  • Apply polymerics to assemblies such as conformal coating, staking, and bonding
  • Assemble systems to procedures using calibrated torque tools
  • Work with staff to order supplies and equipment from vendors
  • Inspect circuit board assemblies as needed
  • Maintain test setups including thermal and thermal-vac test chambers. Requires knowledge of Pirani gauges, ion gauges, vacuum controllers, temperature controllers, roughing pumps, turbo pumps, and automated control systems
  • Design, fabricate, and install multi-layer insulated (MLI) blankets
  • Evolve existing automated assembly (pick and place) equipment to fully realize its capability for moderate scale build operations (10+ units)
  • Assist in pre-delivery preparation of products to include unit-level cleaning and packing; may include planning, procurement, and preparation of shipping containers
  • Maintain product workflow status in Project Support System control/status software
