Responsibilities

The Space Instrumentation Department builds satellite and ground-based instruments and small satellite platforms to characterize space phenomenology and life-limiting and performance-limiting impacts to satellite systems along with potential new technologies.  The department supports a broad cross-section of the Corporation in design, assembly, test, and characterization of electro-mechanical systems which involve particle detectors, lasers and associated communications, RF communications, high speed focal plane arrays, satellite avionics, mechanisms, optical assemblies, electronics packaging, and test equipment.  The successful applicant will contribute by performing tasks including electronic systems architecture design, schematic capture, electronics parts selection and derating, SPICE modeling, embedded software and Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) design and simulation, printed circuit board layout oversight for technician staff, development of fabrication instructions and design review materials, circuit and system testing, and development of Windows PC readout and data archival tools.  The position offers the opportunity for a creative individual to innovate in a fast-paced instrument development environment where direct access to and mentoring by senior staff are provided to accelerate the learning process.

 

 

Key Functions

  • Develop architectures for scientific instruments and associated ground test equipment including digital, analog, and power systems
  • Develop schematics for circuit board assemblies utilizing embedded software (microprocessors and microcontrollers) and Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs) where appropriate
  • Perform SPICE modeling to validate analog circuit performance prior to build
  • Design, test, and debug embedded microcontroller code
  • Design, simulate, test, and debug embedded FPGA code
  • Select parts for designs and perform de-rating analysis per NASA EEE-INST-002
  • Develop parts lists for board assemblies and fabrication instructions for assembly staff
  • Perform laboratory trouble-shooting of board assemblies using laboratory test equipment
  • Develop test plans and verification cross reference documents
  • Develop User’s Guides for deliverable hardware items
  • Develop Interface Control Documents (IDCs) for multifaceted programs

 

Qualifications

Required

  • BS or higher in Electrical Engineering or a related field
  • Must have a minimum of 2 years of electrical engineering design experience from industry; coursework may qualify depending on relevancy
  • Experience with schematic capture to include board design, external interfaces, and transfer to layout tools
  • Experience developing Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs) using VHDL or Verilog design languages and tools
  • Experience with SPICE for analog circuit simulation
  • Experience developing embedded software for microcontrollers, microprocessors, or embedded IP cores
  • Experience debugging moderate to complex circuit assemblies
  • Experience working in a diverse team setting where multiple engineering disciplines (mechanical, electrical, software) are involved
  • Experience developing system requirements, design review presentations, and fabrication and test instructions
  • Experience in Microsoft Office applications including Word, PowerPoint, and Excel
  • Demonstrated self-starter with appetite for wide array of engineering design challenges
  • Customer service orientation
  • Must work well in a team environment
  • Must be detail oriented
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to work under minimal supervision, to self-initiate activities, and to work within timelines
  • This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance, which is issued by the U.S. government.  U.S. citizenship is required to obtain a security clearance

 

Preferred

  • Experience with Mentor Graphics DxDesigner software
  • Experience with Microsemi Libero or Xilinx Vivado FPGA design tools
  • Experience with Microchip microcontroller development tools
  • Experience with LTSpice SPICE modeling tools
  • Experience programming in LabView or C/C++
  • Experience using HyperLynx for signal integrity analysis
