Responsibilities

The primarily focus of this role is on the design, analysis, simulation, and system engineering of all types of communication systems, including space-based military and commercial systems and terrestrial wireless radio systems.  In this role you will provide research development and engineering support within the communication systems engineering organization.  

 

Key Functions

  • Solves technical problems in digital communication systems under supervision and guidance. Contacts are primarily with immediate supervisor, project leaders, and/or other MTS professionals in the group.
  • Develops and tests prototypes of communication and signal processing systems in the laboratory and in the field.
  • Performs analytical studies, conducts software simulations and hardware emulations, develops details of specifications, and prepares details of analytical report findings for all types of communication systems including spaced-based military and commercial wireless systems (e.g., 5G, IoT).
  • Supports the evaluation of link performance in the presence of noise, fading, and jamming employing advanced channel coding and modulation techniques.
  • Participates in the development of program interfaces between hardware equipment; diagnoses both hardware and software simulation tool problems; designs improvements to simulation environments; develops and/or modifies programs for data reduction and analysis.
  • Some travel may be required for this role. 

 

This role can be filled as an Aerospace Member of Technical Staff or Senior Member of Technical Staff

Qualifications

Required

  • Master’s Degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or related discipline from an accredited university
  • Minimum of 1 - 2 years of hands-on experience
  • Strong background in digital communication theory, channel, waveform (modulation and coding), digital signal processing, communication systems, modeling, simulation and performance analysis
  • Software development skills in languages such as MATLAB, Python, and C++
  • Ability to present results effectively in briefings and technical reports.
  • Excellent organizational, as well as written and oral communication skills
  • Strong teamwork and interpersonal skills
  • Some travel
  • Must be able to obtain a Secret government clearance with further ability to obtain Top Secret Clearance (US citizenship required)

 

Preferred

  • Master's Degree with at least 5 years experience in engineering development and acquisition or Ph.D. in electrical engineering, communications, or systems engineering
  • Experience in communication systems engineering, including design, analysis, modeling, simulation, and performance evaluation
  • In-depth digital signal processing skills in subjects such as multirate DSP, synchronization, estimation and detection theory, and array processing
  • Exposure to modern wireless communication standards and their underlying signal processing techniques
  • Experience with military and commercial satellite communications
  • Experience with  ground networks
  • Experience with real-time software and hardware design
  • Hands-on laboratory experience with modems, FPGAs, Software-Defined Radios (SDR), RF hardware, antennas, and test equipment
  • Current and active Secret level clearance or higher
Qualifications for consideration as a Sr. Member of Technical Staff

Required

  • Minimum of 2 - 5 years hands-on experience after obtaining a Master's degree or minimum of 1-2 years hands-on experience after Ph.D. degree
  • Strong background in digital communication theory, channel, waveform (modulation and coding), signal processing, communication systems, and resource management
  • Demonstrated ability to optimize architectures based on analysis, system design, coding, modulation, network, and spectrum utilization parameters
  • Strong software development skills in languages such as MATLAB, Python, and C++
  • Ability to present results effectively in briefings and technical reports
  • Excellent organizational, as well as written and oral communication skills
  • Some travel
  • Must be able to obtain a Secret level government clearance with further ability to obtain Top Secret Clearance (US citizenship required)

 

Preferred

  • Current and active Top Secret / Sensitive Compartmented Information (TS/SCI) clearance
