Responsibilities

SUMMARY OF RESPONSIBILITIES

The Systems Director for Space and Ground in the Development Planning and Projects Sub-Division leads an organization of engineers providing technical systems engineering to explore all mission areas and aspects of National Security Space (NSS).  The Systems Director is primarily responsible for leading technical experts, acquisition planning, concept development, and prototype formation to SMC/AD, Advanced Systems and Development Directorate. Additional responsibilities include support to the SMC Portfolio Architect’s Office providing acquisition planning, concept development, and prototype development. Many of these activities include partnering between Aerospace (SMC Program Offices and ETG), external organizations (NRO, NNSA, NASA, NOAA, commercial, et al) and SETAs.  Responsibilities include working directly with Air Force leadership, advising and assisting them in the areas of acquisition approaches; space and ground concept development; enterprise architecting; and prototype formation.  The Systems Director of the Development Planning and Projects Sub-Division will be responsible for managing STE allocation and funding; overseeing the quality of technical products; strategic planning, goals and objective setting; and staff growth and development.  Broader Corporate responsibilities include facilitating coordination across Aerospace for future architectures.

Key Functions:

  • Inspire staff to create unique innovative ideas and concepts for utilization in NSS studies for future missions, concepts and enterprise architectures focusing on enterprise resiliency.
  • Integrate and leverage all aspects/functions/capability of the Aerospace Corporation in solving difficult and vague NSS issues presented by the government through virtual teaming, backplane engagement, ETG matrix, etc.
  • Position Aerospace in the highest value functions across SMC/AD and the Portfolio Architect.
  • Integration of Aerospace knowledge and analysis to provide responsive recommendations to the customer leadership for ongoing programs, new programs of record, and prototype priorities.
  • Work with the customer to define high value scope of work, translate customer technical operating plans into technical priorities, manage budget constraints, plan and execute staffing as required.
  • Manage the technical operating plans, budget control, staffing, workforce needs, personnel development, technical positions, and customer interaction supporting the SMC prototyping branch.
  • Develop the group’s objectives and strategy to be consistent with the corporate goals, customer expectations, and provide direction and planning for achieving strategic goals.
  • Actively participate in customer senior decision forums.
  • Anticipate the customer’s future needs and create an agile work force that can respond.

Essential Duties:

  • Deliver credible, objective analysis and support to enable informed investment decisions on future military space capabilities

 

Goal:

  • Provide intellectual leadership that develops, demonstrates and delivers people, processes and tools to consistently and comprehensively focus the Corporation’s best talent on space and ground concept and architecture evaluation, validation, demonstration, integration and prototype development

Qualifications

REQUIRED:

  • A bachelor’s degree in science, math or engineering.
  • 12 or more years of progressively responsible professional engineering/scientific experience
  • Experience leading significant studies and efforts
  • Ability to build and/or maintain substantive rapport with Aerospace peers and government customers
  • Demonstrated ability to influence outcomes utilizing objective facts.
  • Ability to translate customer needs into Aerospace appropriate work packages
  • Demonstrated commitment to collaborative efforts supporting multiple technical areas
  • Excellent written communication skills - can organize complex materials and concepts in a manner that is clear and logical
  • Excellent verbal communication skills - clear, concise, persuasive; builds consensus through speaking; polished, professional style
  • Some travel is required
  • Ability to obtain a TS/SCI and eligibility for SAP, current TS/SCI preferred

 

PREFERRED:

  • Advanced degree in technical discipline (science, math or engineering)
  • An excellent personal technical reputation and a record of personal technical achievement
  • Management experience: Aerospace budgets, STE management, personnel management, etc.
  • Ability to organize and execute high quality, substantive activities including technical forums, major studies and executive presentations
  • Demonstrated flexibility to adapt an organization in response to constantly changing customer requirements and needs
  • Technical depth in multiple space mission areas
  • Program Office experience
