Responsibilities

The Electromechanical Control Department (ECD) provides engineering/scientific support in the area of control system hardware and algorithms for both spacecraft and launch vehicles. ECD specializes in sensors such as accelerometers, gyroscopes, star trackers, encoders, and GPS receivers; in actuators including electric motors, reaction wheels, gimbals, and fast steering mirrors; and in integrated systems such as servomechanisms, line-of-sight pointing systems, and thrust vector control systems.

 

Key Functions

  • Provide technical expertise in the area of electromechanical control systems
  • Support multiple programs and work independently with both internal and external customers as a technical authority, consultant, primary investigator, or project leader
  • Provide oversight, guidance, and technical advice on customer projects, which may include specialized analytical and experimental studies for spacecraft and launch vehicle control system hardware.  Analytical studies often involve simulation, analysis, and document review.  Experimental investigations may include experiment design, controller design and implementation, electro-optical system calibration and alignment, and sensor and actuator performance evaluation in the Mechatronics Research Laboratory
  • Lead or organize technical efforts or project teams and provide technical advice to management, customers, and associated contractors
  • Verify contractor designs, approaches, and overall system performance
  • Work with minimal management oversight and have the ability to coordinate, organize and lead the work of other Aerospace staff
  • Generate written reports and presentations to customers and Aerospace management
  • Mentor less experienced staff and serve as role model
  • Travel is required

Qualifications

Required

  • Bachelor’s degree in an engineering or scientific field with at least 12 years of post-Bachelor's degree experience
  • Experience with spacecraft and/or launch vehicle control hardware
  • Experience providing technical support in multi-program, multi-agency environments with government program office personnel, engineering support and contractors
  • Experience peforming technical tasks, forming and leading technical teams and effectively supporting multiple programs
  • Experience training and mentoring less experienced technical staff
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DoD security clearance, which is issued by the U.S. government. U.S. citizenship ir required

 

Preferred

  • 15 or more years of increasingly responsible professional experience and/or advanced degree in engineering or related field
  • Demonstrated ability to provide innovative solutions to challenging technical problems
  • Significant experience in one or more of the following would be valued: sensors, actuators, and integrated systems (e.g., electric motors, rotational sensors, reaction wheels, and control moment gyros). Experience in one or more of the following would also be valued: launch vehicle systems (thrust vector control and guidance systems), space vehicle control systems, mechanical design, robotics, structural analysis, dynamics, electronics, optics, signal processing, systems engineering, real-time software development, guidance and navigation, GPS receiver and algorithm development, or small satellite build and development
  • Ability to work closely with senior Aerospace/government management
  • Proficiency with any of the following tools: MATLAB/Simulink, dSPACE, LabVIEW, SolidWorks, C/C++, Python
