Responsibilities

The Embedded Control Systems Department performs independent verification and validation of flight software embedded within avionics systems aboard launch vehicles and spacecraft. Our multidisciplinary staff provides technical oversight throughout the flight software development process, from requirements definition to day-of-launch and on-orbit operations. We develop high-fidelity closed-loop simulators and test the software to assess its readiness for flight. In addition, we develop and test real-time embedded software for emerging technologies including picosats, robotics, UAS, and hosted payloads. This position is for the Section Manager of the Control Software Analysis section within the department.

 

Key Functions

  • Conduct tests and perform analyses of software systems embedded within launch vehicles, spacecraft, picosats, and other mission-critical components of space systems
  • Conduct independent research and development to advance the state of the art in flight software testing and data analysis capabilities
  • Develop and operate hardware-in-the-loop, software-in-the-loop, and emulator-based simulations including models of sensor, actuator, and vehicle dynamics to assess closed-loop performance of embedded control systems
  • Support launch, initialization, and on-orbit mission operations
  • Support flight software verification through requirements analyses, design and code peer reviews, and unit test inspections and analyses
  • Work closely with staff and program offices to efficiently prioritize and utilize resources to provide informed recommendations for section responsibilities
  • Coordinate and assume responsibility for preparation and presentation of technical reports, briefings, and analyses prepared by section staff
  • Expand technical capabilities of the section, with focus on automation, continuous integration, and AI
  • Recommend staffing needs, post new job requisitions, and participate in the assessment and eventual hiring of candidates
  • Provide guidance for professional growth of section staff through formal performance reviews and informal feedback and mentoring sessions
  • Other managerial responsibilities include the pursuit of new business opportunities, contributions to the achievement of corporate initiatives, and other supervisory tasks

Qualifications

Required

  • Master’s degree in an engineering or scientific discipline and typically five or more years of embedded systems experience
  • Experience with software development, particularly for the embedded real-time systems
  • Experience working with/around software development processes
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DoD secret security clearance; which is issued by the U.S. government. U.S. citizenship is required.
  • Ability to travel

 

Preferred

  • PhD in engineering or scientific discipline
  • Strong background in space systems and software development processes
  • Experience relevant to dynamics and control systems
  • Experience developing and using software- and hardware-in-the-loop testbeds to validate flight software
  • An active SCI clearance or current (<4 years old) SSBI
