Responsibilities

The Electromechanical Control Department (ECD) is comprised of highly respected engineers, who provide matrix support in the area of control system hardware and algorithms for both spacecraft and launch vehicles. ECD subject matter experts specialize in key components such as gyroscopes, star trackers, encoders, motors, accelerometers, reaction wheels, fast steering mirrors, servo mechanisms, GPS receivers, and others.  The department performs both technical studies and experimental investigations to support customer programs. Technical studies often involve the analysis, simulation, evaluation, or testing of control systems and their components. Experimental investigations may include controller design and implementation, data reduction and visualization, sensor and actuator performance evaluation, and electro-optical systems calibration and alignment in the Mechatronics Research Laboratory.  Tasks may involve interaction with government customers, program management, and contractors.

 

Key Functions

  • Performs technical studies involving testing, analysis and simulation of control systems on a variety of satellite or launch vehicle programs in a highly-structured team setting
  • Support multiple programs, and work independently with both internal and external customers as well as associated technical support
  • Provide guidance and technical advice on customer projects, which may include specialized analytical and experimental studies for spacecraft and launch vehicle control system hardware.
  • Provide technical support to Program Offices in technical interchange meetings, design reviews, hardware reviews, and review of contractor analyses
  • Verify contractor designs, approaches, and overall system performance.
  • Generate written technical reports and presentations to customers and Aerospace management
  • Work closely with subject matter experts to build knowledge on critical topics
  • Travel may be required

 

This position could be filled as a Senior Member of Technical Staff or an Engineering Specialist. 

Qualifications

Required

  • Advanced degree in aerospace engineering, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, physics, or a related technical discipline with at least 5 years post-Bachelor's degree related engineering or scientific experience
  • Experience leading a project in one of the following areas: launch vehicle systems (thrust vector control, guidance systems, and/or avionics), space vehicle control systems, mechanical design, structural analysis, dynamics, electronics, optics, signal processing, systems engineering, real-time software development, guidance and navigation, GPS receiver testing and associated algorithms, motors, small satellite development, or robotics
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance, which is issued by the U.S. government.  U.S. citizenship is required to obtain a security clearance

 

Preferred 

  • Strong background in control system sensors and actuators, with a thorough understanding of one of the areas mentioned in the previous section
  • Demonstrated ability to develop innovative solutions to complex engineering problems
  • Proficiency with any of the following tools: MATLAB/Simulink, dSPACE, LabVIEW, SolidWorks, C/C++, Python
  • Active Secret Clearance with the ability to obtain a TS/SCI Security Clearance

 

 

Required for Engineering Specialist

  • Advanced degree in aerospace engineering, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, physics, or a related technical discipline with at least 8 years post-Bachelor's degree related engineering or scientific experience
  • Experience leading a project in one of the following areas: launch vehicle systems (thrust vector control, guidance systems, and/or avionics), space vehicle control systems, mechanical design, structural analysis, dynamics, electronics, optics, signal processing, systems engineering, real-time software development, guidance and navigation, GPS receiver testing and associated algorithms, motors, small satellite development, or robotics
  • Experience in control system sensors and actuators, with a thorough understanding of one of the areas mentioned above
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance, which is issued by the U.S. government.  U.S. citizenship is required to obtain a security clearance

Physical Requirements/Work Environments

  • Position requires sitting most of the time at a workstation, using a computer and possible work in a laboratory
  • Exposure to general office and laboratory noise
  • Local travel to off-site meetings and air travel to Aerospace or Customer office locations is required.
  • Ability to communicate with individuals and groups in person, by phone and telepresence.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee will typically work in an office and laboratory environment.
