Responsibilities

The Propulsion Science Department is looking for an ambitious scientist/engineer to join our group supporting customers in the rapidly evolving space business, particularly in experimental research in propulsion and high energy systems.  The successful applicant will be responsible for the development, test and application of chemical propulsion technology in support of Space and Missile Systems Center and space-related activities. He/She will execute advanced research and development programs in propulsion, chemical reaction kinetics and fluid dynamics, and detonation phenomena in compliance with established Safety Guidelines. He/She will establish vigorous, Program supported research efforts utilizing the existing Propulsion Research Facility and Aerospace Laboratories as well as developing future capabilities to meet emerging needs.

 

Key Functions

  • Aiding in the development, test and application of chemical propulsion technology
  • Address national security space problems in areas of solid and liquid rocket motor combustion as well as detonations associated with materials in liquid oxygen
  • Laboratory testing and technical evaluation related to the flight certification of spacecraft employing chemical and electric propulsion and related technology 
  • Development and maintenance of customer relations and program support with the Space and Missile Systems Center, national security agencies, NASA and commercial customers
  • Conduct propulsion research projects

 

This position can be filled a Member of Technical Staff or a Senior Member of Technical Staff.

Qualifications

Required

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering or scientific field with five years of professional or educational experience
  • Experience in experimental research and measurement, computer controlled data acquisition (e.g., Labview), and data analysis (e.g., MatLab) with a strong publication record of accomplishment
  • Demonstrated coursework or experience in Chemical Thermodynamics and Chemical Kinetics
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Secret security clearance, which is issued by the U.S. government. U.S. citizenship is required to obtain a clearance. 

 

Preferred

  • Ph.D. in physical chemistry or physics
  • Expertise in both shock wave and combustion areas, including chemical kinetics and detonations
  • Capable of contributing to both experimental and theoretical aspects of shock waves, high temperature kinetics, and propulsion technology
  • Knowledge or experience in spacecraft chemical/electric propulsion systems, experimental thruster testing, experimental diagnostics, and/or propellant chemistry
  • Experience/expertise in laser diagnostics

 

 

Required for a Senior Member of Technical Staff

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering or scientific field with seven years of professional or educational experience
  • Experience in experimental research and measurement, computer controlled data acquisition (e.g., Labview), and data analysis (e.g., MatLab) with a strong publication record of accomplishment
  • Experience in Chemical Thermodynamics and Chemical Kinetics
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Secret security clearance, which is issued by the U.S. government. U.S. citizenship is required to obtain a clearance.
