Responsibilities

An appointment for a full-time employee to perform technical assignments in an assigned field. The Small Satellite Development & Operations Section designs, builds and operates a constellation of small satellites. The Aerospace Corporation has consistently been a leader in the development of CubeSats (satellites with a mass less than a few kgs, deployed from a standardized container), with over 15 CubeSats developed, built, and flown since 1999.

 

Key Functions:

  • Detailed mechanical satellite design with CAD modeling
  • Oversees the completion of production prints and assembly drawings
  • Provides complex CAD models and drawings to internal and external machine shops for fabrication
  • Compose and manage bill of materials (BOM)
  • Fit checks for sub-assemblies and entire vehicle integration
  • Harness design and specification
  • Assembly of microsatellite components and integration into higher level assemblies
  • Documentation of the assembly process including serial number tracking for all items integrated into the final assembly and photographing all steps
  • Testing of sub-assemblies and fully integrated microsatellites
  • Provide cost estimates for purchased parts and processes
  • Quote, purchase and track progress of ordered and fabricated parts
  • Assists in the upkeep and daily maintenance of the lab to meet safety and operating procedures.

Qualifications

Required:

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering or related program
  • Minimum GPA of 3.0
  • 0-1 year of industry experience
  • Experience with CAD design software (experience with SOLIDWORKS design software strongly desired)
  • Must be able to obtain a security clearance
  • Must work well in a team environment
  • Must be detail oriented
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and projects
  • Must possess strong organizational skills
  • Ability to handle multiple priorities and projects at one time
  • Effective interpersonal skills to coordinate efforts and work with other internal and external organizations
  • Demonstrated flexibility and ability to adapt to changing organizational needs
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to work under minimal supervision, to self-initiate activities, and to work within timelines
  • Must possess time management and project management skills
  • Knowledge of machine shop practices and methodology
  • Ability to quickly troubleshoot problems

 

Preferred:

  • 2 or more years of relevant experience
  • GPA 3.5 or higher

 

Physical Requirements/Work Environments:

  • Ability to sit or stand for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to communicate with individuals and groups in person, by phone and telepresence.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee will typically work in both an office and laboratory environment.
  • Laboratory environment with possible exposure to hazardous materials.
  • Certain laboratories may operate at a high noise level.
