A trusted partner. A national resource. A leader in national security space. We are THE Aerospace Corporation.  A team that takes pride in our readiness to solve some of the most complex technical challenges in existence. With challenges spanning clandestine to commercial, you’ll have the unique opportunity to work on projects that are literally evolving our nation's space and launch capabilities. We all share a common passion and aspiration – to serve a mission much bigger than ourselves.  When you join our team, you’ll be part of a rare collection of thought leaders and game-changing innovators.  Are you ready to launch your career?

The Structures Department within the Vehicle Systems Division is seeking a well-qualified individual with a strong foundation in solid mechanics, practical experience in structural analysis using both hand calculations and finite element analysis techniques, a passion for the space industry, and a desire to apply their expertise to help solve a variety of technical challenges.  As a member of the Launch Structures Section, the chosen candidate will have a unique opportunity to gain insight into the metallic and composite structures being developed across industry for the next generation of space launch vehicles while developing technical assessments to help inform government customer decisions.

Key Functions

  • Develop and assess design criteria, requirements, and specification for launch vehicle structures and mechanical interfaces
  • Evaluate concepts for advanced launch vehicle structures, critically assess detailed designs, and conduct technical studies (including independent analysis as necessary) to assure the structural integrity and stability of existing and new entrant launch vehicle hardware subjected to static, dynamic and thermal loads
  • Develop advanced analytical and test techniques for structural design and evaluation
  • Offer technical consultation and advice in formulating and assessing test plans, procedures, objectives and success criteria that contribute to the construction and execution of test programs for development, qualification, and acceptance of structures
  • Provide real-time monitoring of test execution and contribute to the evaluation and resolution of any test issues or anomalies
  • Perform critical reviews of flight hardware pedigree prior to launch and evaluate and assess all risks
  • Maintain state-of-the-art skills in activities related to design, analysis, and testing of materials and structures
  • Provide timely technical recommendations to line management and customers through technical briefings and reports

  • Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering or related technical field with 5+ years of post-Bachelor’s experience
  • Industry experience performing finite element analysis
  • Experience or coursework in structural mechanics such as composite materials, nonlinear materials, fracture, and fatigue
  • Some travel is required
  • This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance issued by the U.S. Government. U.S. citizenship is required to obtain a security clearance

  • Master’s degree in engineering with a focus on structural mechanics or closely related field and 3+ years of increasingly responsible and related engineering experience, or a Ph.D. in engineering with a focus on structural mechanics or closely related field and 2+ years of related engineering experience
  • Proficient in the design, structural analysis, and test of launch vehicle structures, particularly metallic pressure stabilized structures
  • Proficient with Nastran, Abaqus, or other commercial finite element software
  • Demonstrated ability to coordinate technical assignments and lead project teams
  • Demonstrated ability to disposition hardware nonconformances
  • Direct experience correlating finite element model predictions to test results
