Responsibilities

SUMMARY OF RESPONSIBILITIES

The Operations and Sustainment Principal Director is responsible for providing technical and programmatic leadership to the operations and sustainment of deployed AFSPC systems – including space and ground assets for MILSATCOM and GPS at Schriever AFB, Space Based Infrared Sensing (SBIRS)/Overhead Persistent Infrared (OPIR) systems at Buckley AFB, the Air Force Satellite Control Network (AFSCN) and Launch and Test Range System (LTRS) assets at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, FL and Vandenberg AFB, CA. 

 

As a manager, the Principal Director assigns resources, determines staffing needs, and coordinates activities and operations among staff; communicates and coordinates activities to counterpart organizations, management, and customers.  The position requires remote management of personnel.  The selected candidate will work in close cooperation with Aerospace, SETA, SE&I and sustainment contractor personnel, including contractor factory support.  The selected candidate will interface with multiple customer organizations including the SMC sustainment group at Peterson AFB, Wing and Operations Groups at Schriever AFB and Buckley AFB, and AFSPC and 14 AF personnel.  The selected candidate will be expected to provide proactive support to the customer and cultivate productive working relationships in a fast-paced multi-organizational environment.  The position requires travel, particularly in the CO area. The primary job location for the position is at Peterson AFB in Colorado Springs, CO, with significant responsibility at Schriever AFB in Colorado Springs, CO and at Buckley AFB in Aurora, CO.

KEY FUNCTIONS

  • Manages a geographically diverse team.  Establishes and focuses organization direction and objectives consistent with corporate goals, customer needs and assigned functions.
  • Communicates goals to team and monitors progress towards stated goals. Monitors performance of staff, conducts performance reviews, recommends salary actions, and recommends performance improvement, career development, training, reassignment, transfer, and other staff deployments. Plan, organize and manage tasks and projects for the organization in an efficient and effective manner. 
  • Provides systems engineering and subject matter expert support to operations, anomaly resolution, and resiliency tactics, techniques and procedures (TTPs) for supported mission areas
  • Provides proactive support to the sustainment customer to identify high value work for the organization, translate customer requests into technical priorities and plan and manage the team accordingly
  • Provides technical and programmatic leadership to Launch Range modernization efforts
  • Plans and manages Aerospace support (including the Engineering and Technology Group (ETG) and Project West Wing (PWW)) to conduct assessments of new capabilities and support their transition to operations
  • Coordinates with mission area engineering and architecting counterparts to ensure operations and sustainment considerations are included in early phases of new acquisitions
  • Collaborates with Enterprise Ground organization to ensure coordination of sustainment and development integration efforts
  • Provides guidance and leadership to operations and sustainment in the transition to an agile capability delivery model and the operational implementation of the Space Warfighting Construct.
Qualifications

Required

  • Bachelor's degree or higher in engineering, science or math from a recognized institution
  • 12 or more years of progressively responsible professional engineering/scientific experience including program office experience
  • Demonstrated technical leadership, mature judgment, strong interpersonal skills for interacting with Aerospace peers and executive management, contractors, customers and corporate staff
  • Substantial experience in a managerial role with proven ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with all levels of contractors, customers and staff
  • Demonstrated organizational skills in planning and managing tasks, projects and personnel
  • Experience with AFSPC mission ground systems, architectures and operations
  • Experience in satellite launch, early on-orbit test, operations and sustainment
  • Demonstrated experience in building and leading teams with diverse skills mix
  • Demonstrated outstanding oral and written communication skills
  • Current SSBI clearance with SCI access

 

Preferred

  • 15 or more years of progressively responsible professional engineering/scientific experience
  • Advanced technical degree in engineering, science or math
  • Experience working at a customer/operational facility and regional office environment
  • Previous Aerospace management experience
  • Familiarity with agile and DevOps processes
  • Familiarity with AFSPC processes of fielding capabilities into operations
  • Knowledge of DoD cybersecurity policies, approval processes and defensive cyber operations
  • Current, or ability to obtain SAP accesses
