Responsibilities

SUMMARY OF RESPONSIBILITIES

The Aerospace Corporation is seeking a Space Systems Architecture Engineer Undergraduate Intern for an internship opportunity. This position will be located in Chantilly, VA. 

The qualified candidate will become part of the Space Architecture Department which provides system-level, architecture-level, and cross-portfolio engineering and program assessment analyses of space systems and launch systems, collaborating with other organizations across Aerospace as needed, for NASA and National Security Space (NSS) programs. The department manages the System Architecture Team and Human Spaceflight Team, two of six Concept Design Center (CDC) teams, and supports the other four CDC teams as needed. The department manages several programmatic and cost assessment capabilities, in coordination with other Aerospace cost experts, and is developing a more comprehensive and integrated Model-Based System Engineering (MBSE) analysis capability. The department also supports detailed launch vehicle performance assessments as needed in concert with its launch architecture analysis capability. 

 

KEY FUNCTIONS 

  • Space Systems Architecture Engineer will plan and perform technical systems engineering within the Space Architecture Department 
  • Participate in a broad range of architecture-level design activities to support our NSS, civil and commercial customers 
  • Emphasis will be on development and evaluation of innovative and cost-effective space systems architectures, concepts, and performance 
  • Specific activities include: 
    • Participate in multi-disciplinary study teams 
    • Provide independent assessments in support to readiness events 
    • Identify and assess technical risk 
    • Support End-to-End modeling activities 
    • Closely collaborate with other Aerospace personnel within the Architecture and Design Subdivision (ADS) 
    • May also work with the NSS, civil and commercial customers to identify top-level requirements and develop pre-acquisition architectures that will drive new systems of systems 
    • Prepare reports, develop briefings, and present recommendations to customers and Aerospace management.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Currently enrolled at an accredited college/university degree program pursuing a Bachelor's degree in Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Astrophysic or related program
  • Experience with Microsoft Office applications (Word, PowerPoint and Excel)
  • Minimum GPA 3.0
  • Must be able to obtain a security clearance
  • US Citizenship required

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • GPA 3.5 or higher
  • Active security clearance
  • Familiarity with spacecraft, payloads, ground systems, and launch systems are all preferred. 
  • Good interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively with customers, Aerospace program offices and contractors 
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills 
  • Ability to manage multiple simultaneous tasks, and be flexible and adaptable to changes in tasking 
  • Knowledge of space architecture conceptual design, analysis, and concurrent engineering techniques, or Systems engineering experience
