Help shape the future of U.S. space collection capabilities. The Advanced Technology Directorate is seeking a Small Satellite R&D System Engineer/Sr. Small Satellite R&D System Engineer to provide system engineering in the development of system concepts and small satellite projects to meet national objectives. In this role, you will have the opportunity to transform ideas into demonstration flight systems. This position will assist and monitor design, development, integration and test as well as work with and utilize Aerospace subject matter experts to conduct risk assessments, initiate analytic studies and perform experiments.  



  • Provide direct, program office support to a research and development organization in the concept development and acquisition of a small satellite system.
  • Interact effectively and efficiently with government customers to provide independent and direct assistance in systems engineering.
  • Provide mission assurance in the execution of customer programs including risk assessment of end-to-end system design, identification of risk and coordination of risk mitigation activities to ensure mission success.
  • Formulate and perform in-depth technical analysis, evaluations, and experimentation against identified risk areas using subject matter experts and the Aerospace laboratories across a wide range of R&D developments.
  • Guide Aerospace Engineering Matrix resources effectively to meet customer needs.
  • Identify promising advanced technologies and develop technology roadmaps that encompass activities across the IC and DoD communities.



For the Small Satellite R&D System Engineer:

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering, physics or a related science technical discipline from a recognized institution
  • A current and active TS/SCI
  • This position requires the ability to have and maintain a security clearance, which is issued by the U.S. government.  U.S. citizenship is required to obtain a security clearance
  • Minimum 8 years of progressively responsible experience in engineering
  • Prior systems engineering experience specifically in concept development, concept analysis, requirements, development and test.
  • Superior interpersonal, written and oral communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively maintain working relationships with all levels of customer, contractor, SETA and Aerospace personnel

In addition to the above, the Sr. Small Satellite R&D System Engineer must have the following:

  • Minimum 12 years of progressively responsible experience in engineering
  • Experience in mission assurance planning and implementation
  • Experience working with research and development activities to include engineering and analysis, systems analysis, and space systems development.  
  • Ability to conduct the key functions of the position with minimum supervision



  • An advanced degree in engineering, mathematics, physical sciences, or computer science.
  • Experience working with research and development activities to include engineering and analysis, systems analysis, and space systems development.  (Required for Sr. Small Satellite R&D System Engineer)
  • Expertise in scoping, leading and completing technical and programmatic assessments (i.e technical risks, analysis of design alternatives…) with a mix of program office and subject matter expertise.
  • Prior experience in design, development and deployment of National Security Space missions
  • Prior experience with RF and electronic systems for space systems
  • Experience with geosynchronous satellite systems, including knowledge of main components, assemblies, sub-assemblies as well as space environmental requirements
  • Working knowledge of expertise from across the Aerospace corporation, especially subject matter experts and laboratory operations with the ability to support customer needs
