The Vehicle Design and Innovation Department (VDID) within the Architecture and Design Subdivision provide vehicle system engineering and programmatic support for its customers. Though the emphasis is placed on upfront system engineering, feasibility design and analysis, and concept development VDID staff provide end-to-end system engineering support throughout a program life cycle. The selected candidate possesses experience applying and managing vehicle system engineering processes and tools throughout the lifecycle of space vehicle programs. In addition, the candidate will possess broad experience in leading and working with multi-disciplinary teams and organizations.



Key Functions

  • Independently develop and analyze innovative spacecraft bus and payload pre-acquisition concept designs for Department of Defense (DoD), national security space (NSS), NASA, NOAA, and commercial customers.
  • Develop top-level requirements for space missions and designs
  • Lead and participate in multi-disciplinary, geographically diverse study teams; including Aerospace’s unique Concept Design Center
  • Perform independent assessments in support of readiness events
  • Identify and assess risk (technical, programmatic, cost, and schedule) of space missions.
  • Work closely with National Security Space and civil and commercial Program Offices in support of their spacecraft development activities





  • Bachelor's degree in aerospace, systems, mechanical, or electrical engineering; or related field of science, engineering, mathematics from a recognized institution
  • 12 or more years of increasingly responsible and applicable experience in engineering or technical roles related to design; development; integration and test; and launch of space systems
  • Knowledge of systems engineering, conceptual design and analysis, and concurrent engineering techniques, as well as an application of these principles in support of space program acquisition
  • Demonstrated ability to initiate and complete tasks, learn new technical approaches, lead technical efforts, and interact effectively with a broad range of organizations
  • Demonstrated ability to train and mentor less experienced technical staff
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple simultaneous tasks and be flexible and adaptable to changes in tasking
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively with Government customers, Aerospace program offices and contractors, and engineering staff across a broad range of disciplines
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Current and active TS/SSBI 





  • Advanced degree in engineering, science, or a related field.
  • Knowledge of spacecraft hardware design; functionality; and size, weight, and power limitations.  
  • Familiarity with space remote sensing techniques
  • Familiarity with contractor spacecraft designs and commercial products, both current and emerging, that can be applied in solving customer’s “hard problems”
  • Demonstrated knowledge in the development of complex models and simulations to analyze vehicle and payload design and performance
  • Proficiency in commercial simulation tools/programming languages, including one or more of: MATLAB, Python, Simulink, STK, C++, SolidWorks
  • Current and active TS/SSBI
