The Aerospace Corporation's Engineering and Technology Group (ETG) functions as a corporate pool of engineering skills and services to support the programs. Within ETG, The Acquisition Risk and Reliability Engineering Department (ARRED) supports its customers through rigorous application of risk and reliability tools and processes in support of mission assurance activities for spacecraft, launch, and their associated ground systems. We have a current need for a reliability engineer to provide technical leadership and expertise for a wide variety of projects and customers; as a member of the ARRED team, you will:



Key Functions: 

  • Provide technical expertise and independent customer support in the areas of space, launch, and ground systems mission assurance (MA) for national security space, civil and commercial customers
  • Assist programs in applying Mission Assurance principles to the design, development, manufacturing, integration and testing of space and ground systems
  • Help develop program Mission Assurance Plans and perform Mission Assurance assessments
  • Assist programs in the selection of appropriate risk-based Mission Assurance Standards
  • Assist programs with review and development of mission assurance aspects of the acquisition and systems engineering products including Systems Engineering Plans (SEP), Statements of Objectives (SOO), and Statements of Work (SOW)
  • Tailor government and industry specifications and standards for a range of space and ground system programs
  • Assist programs with mission assurance requirements to flow down and compliance monitoring
  • Perform risk analysis and risk assessments for space and ground programs
  • Assist program offices with coordination of subject matter expert input prior to qualification review boards, failure review boards, and end unit sell-off.
  • Present results of analyses and assessments to management, customers, and associate contractors
  • Coordinate with and reachback to west-coast based department staff on projects
  • Participate in and sometimes lead small teams to accomplish systems engineering and/or mission assurance tasks
  • Help innovate by developing and applying new technologies (e.g., Model-Based Engineering) to mission assurance in order to enhance existing capabilities and grow capabilities to new application areas




This position is available as an Engineering Specialist and Senior Engineering Specialist 



Required for Engineering Specialist 

  • BS or equivalent degree required in mechanical, electrical, or nuclear engineering, or related field of science or engineering
  • Minimum of 8 years of technical experience after a bachelor's degree
  • Strong background in space systems engineering
  • Familiarity and experience with space system design, development and testing
  • Familiarity and experience with MA disciplines including reliability, quality, environments, manufacturing, parts materials & processes, and specialty engineering (such as EMI/EMC, survivability, radiation, and contamination
  • Problem-solving skills, including the ability to identify, organize, prioritize, and ensure timely completion of tasks
  • Excellent oral communication and interpersonal skills to effectively interact with customers, staff, and management
  • Excellent writing skills and a sample of written technical work
  • Proficient in Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint, and office collaboration tools
  • Current and active TS/SCI clearance




  • Graduate degree in engineering, systems engineering, or reliability
  • Systems Engineering or Reliability engineering certification (e.g. INCOSE or ASQ)
  • Familiarity/experience with reliability modeling/predictions, fault tree or failure modes effects analysis, root cause analysis, and reliability planning or experience with risk planning and assessment
  • Familiarity/experience with SAPHIRE, RELEX / Windchill, or other reliability engineering tools
  • Experience with Model-Based Engineering (MBE) highly desired
  • Familiarity and experience with ground systems




Required for Senior Engineering Specialist 

  • Minimum of 12 years of technical experience after a bachelor's degree
  • Experience leading successful teams and/or projects
  • Experience with space program acquisition and development of systems engineering artifacts (i.e., CDRLs)




  • Recognition in reliability community as an expert in the field through publications and/or symposia or conference presentations
  • Experience with hazard analysis and system safety (MIL-STD-882)
  • Experience with design for reliability (DfR), physics of failure (PoF) or parts materials and processes (PM&P)
  • Demonstrates initiative and innovates in engineering domains by researching and developing new techniques
