Responsibilities

Dynamic and collaborative leader with a track record of successfully leading hardware development and a passion for remote sensing systems development and data exploitation.  As the General Manager (GM) for the Electronics and Sensors Division (ESD), you will lead a world class team of approximately 200 engineers and scientists with expertise in remote sensing; data science and data analytics; analog and digital electronics; parts, materials and processes; power systems; and electronics survivability.  You will be responsible for ensuring that the division provides top technical expertise, engineering products and is consistently responsive to program offices, end customers and internal research and technology development activities.  Additionally, you will be responsible for guiding ESD technical support to customers from concept development through system and hardware design, development, deployment, and operation.

The ESD GM manages organization and workforce planning, staffing and performance, and acts as key interface between program office management, customer management, and corporate executive management.

This position is highly visible and includes regular engagement with senior Aerospace leaders and their respective teams.

The position may be located in Chantilly, Virginia or El Segundo, CA and reports to the Senior Vice President, Engineering and Technology Group.  The division is comprised of three subdivisions, which have staff members/teams located primarily in El Segundo and Chantilly, with a limited number of individuals in other locations.

 

Key Functions

  • Leads, manages and directs resources and overall operations of a dynamic team of leading engineers and scientists
  • Supports corporate-level strategy and ensures that it is aligned to relevant goals for the division, while maintaining alignment between laboratories across the company
  • Develops and implements strategic vision for the division. Provides strategic direction to ESD leaders and staff members, including balance between hardware development support capability and processing support capability.
  • Develops and implements innovative methodologies that continually strengthen the division.  Encourage staff to explore creative options; champions the best and actively drives to implementation / results
  • Preserves, develops, and advances the hardware analysis, hardware design and sensor data exploitation capabilities of ESD
  • Creates environment and holds managers accountable for actively seeking and selecting the best talent
  • Builds diverse pipeline of talent that strengthens the organization’s ability to innovate and adapt
  • Places high priority on developing talent – through coaching, feedback, exposure, and special assignments
  • Manages the division’s overall capital and overhead budget
  • Identifies and pursues technical collaborations within Aerospace; anticipates impact of emerging technologies and adjusts accordingly
  • Demonstrates and facilitates innovative approaches to technical problems, and to addressing emerging and current customer problems
  • Manages change effectively, through communication and clarity and simplicity of approach
  • Delegates effectively to lowest levels possible, and advocates credibly for resources
  • Leads interactions with external parties, including academia and contractors, where feasible
  • Proactively builds relationships with customers, both internal and external to the division
  • Collaborates with other ETG divisions and laboratories on activities of mutual interest

Qualifications

Required

  • Experience working in customer-facing organizations
  • Advanced degree in engineering, physical sciences, or related technical discipline
  • Current SCI access
  • Excellent people management skills
  • Builds partnerships; models collaboration across the organization and facilitates dialogue with a wide variety of stakeholders
  • Deep knowledge of the space industry and customers
  • Ability to develop and implement a strategic vision for the division
  • Ability to operate in a fast-paced, dynamic environment during a time of significant change
  • Cross-functional collaboration and leadership skills, with the ability to make critical decisions and influence others
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills
  • Ability to establish rapport and build trust quickly at all levels of the organization
  • Ability to travel monthly (and more, selectively)

  • Previous experience leading hardware development activities, particularly related to remote sensing
